On 17 October, the College of Engineering building situated in the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) campus was launched. The opening ceremony was officiated by Vice President of SUSTech and Provost Prof. Dongxiao ZHANG.

Mr. Yongsheng LIANG, Director of Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Committee, the University’s leadership, senior officials, and distinguished industrial partners from over 69 industry partners of the College of Engineering (CoE or “the College”) were invited to witness this historic moment.

As part of the event, SUSTech Chairperson Guo Yurong officially announced the opening of the building. The new building symbolizes a tremendous commitment to engineering excellence and is a symbol of the fantastic upward trajectory of the College.

The building will provide more facilities for advancing the University and the industry’s collaboration through joint academic programs and research, contributing to the city and region’s economic development.

SUSTech President Shiyi CHEN attended the ceremony and delivered a speech. He said that Shenzhen is a place where miracles happened. The rapid development of SUSTech over the past ten years is a miracle for the city too.

“The College focuses on industries’ needs by building an application-oriented talent training model and integrating industry and research through knowledge transformation. They have built an efficient way to connect local and regional business, industries, and universities,” said President CHEN.

He hoped that the industry and the University’s resource sharing mechanism would support Shenzhen’s sustainable development.

Mr. Yan CHEN, one of the College’s industrial partner representatives, congratulated SUSTech and the College. Mr. CHEN is the general manager of Han’s Laser Technology Industry Group Co., Ltd. and served as the professor of practice of the College.

He shared the story between Han’s Laser and the College of Engineering. The company has made many research outcomes in intelligent manufacturing and 3D printing with the College’s technological support.

Prof. Zhenghe XU, the Dean of the College, also presented his ideas for the future. “We will explore new engineering education and make our college become the launchpad for the global leaders of tomorrow.”

In the end, the guests put the blessings and expectations to the College of Engineering in two different “Time Capsule,” which will be opened in 2025 and 2070, respectively.

A short video was presented to the audience before the ceremony. The video introduces the building’s construction process and congratulations sent across the globe from the College’s university partners, including Hans Jürgen Hoyer, Secretary-General, IFEES, and Executive Secretary, GEDC,  Reginald DesRoches, Provost of Rice University, and the deans from the world top engineering schools and colleges, such as the University of British Columbia, Monash University in Australia, Nanyang Technology University Singapore, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Illinois Institute of Technology.
