On August 23, 2021, the 2021 undergraduate military training ceremony for the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) was held at the Green Pine Stadium. Military education is a compulsory duty for Chinese university students. It is considered an opportunity for the students to discipline their will, toughen their bodies, as well as learn some basic military information.

Fengliang LI, University Council Chairperson, Qikun XUE, President of SUSTech, members of the University’s leadership team, Yingpei BAO, Vice Head of the Shenzhen Armed Police Detachment, and the Class of 2025 undergraduates attended the opening ceremony.

The ceremony kicked off with the flag-raising tradition as all the freshmen sang the national anthem proudly.

Chairperson Fengliang LI presented the flag to the military training group and encouraged the new students to train hard and enjoy the experience.

President Qikun XUE paid admiration to the military officers and soldiers who undertook the military training for the new undergraduates. He expressed his gratitude to the leaders of SUSTech, the National Defense Education for their continued support, and all the freshmen who participated in the training.

He hopes that the students will enjoy the training and not only see it as fulfilling their military service obligations but also as an educational tool on national defense and understanding the ideals and beliefs in serving their country.

Additionally, the University ensured that strict epidemic prevention and control measures are followed and would complete the training safely and efficiently.

Yingpei BAO spoke on behalf of the Shenzhen Armed Police Detachment. As the country’s future, he said that young college students would get an opportunity to strengthen their national defense education and understand its importance.

He encouraged the new undergraduates to train hard, improve their physical strength during the training, and face any difficulties without fear. As a result, it will lay a solid foundation for the students to tackle any issues they may encounter in the future with a positive mindset and overcome these problems.

Dihao WU, one of the training instructors for the military camp, assured that all training officers and soldiers would abide by the University’s instructions and requirements.

Haotian SUN, a 2021 freshman, spoke on behalf of all the new undergraduates. He said they would learn not to fear hardship and challenge themselves to overcome any difficulties through military training. He added that all the students would train hard and learn more about the importance of national defense.
