My name is Patience Suh, and I stand here today, representing the international students of SUSTech.
I want to start by sharing Oprah Winfrey's moving story. As a big fan, I've always looked up to her. The famous TV host and producer in the 20th century, Oprah Winfrey, once said, "Education is the key to unlocking the world, a passport to freedom." However, behind this glamorous quote is the story of a girl born to a single teenage mother. Although literate, thanks to her grandmother, she was rebellious and defiant. That was until she was sent to an integrated high school, where her life changed drastically. Yes, she had a poor childhood. She was poor and abused. But nothing would have changed if she had remained ignorant of her situation. Only with education did she realize that she was, in fact, underprivileged. Only with education did she rise to be one of the wealthiest and most influential women .
From the story of Ms. Oprah Winfrey, I drew a vital inspiration: the pursuit of quality education is the key to changing one's fate. Fortunately, I met SUSTech, which ranks as a top world-class university which offers excellent educational programs. Upon receiving the offer from SUSTech, I knew it was a wonderful opportunity to pursue my academic dreams.
I believe at SUSTech, we have just as many opportunities to broaden our horizons, build lifelong friendships, and rise to academic challenges, discovering the limitless potential within each and everyone here, just as Oprah Winfrey did through better education.
Looking ahead, we are filled with anticipation. Here, we are not just seekers of knowledge but also ambassadors of cultural exchange.
Although we come from different parts of the world, we bring diverse cultures and backgrounds to this shared community. On this modernized campus, with diverse learning approaches, both local and international students are bound to encounter a fresh perspective. While overcoming cultural and language barriers may seem daunting, we will embrace this new environment. As the saying goes, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do."
Let us remember that we are not lonely in this new journey. United in our pursuit of knowledge, we are now part of a vibrant and supportive community that encourages us to push boundaries and explore new possibilities. As we embark on this adventure, let us do so with courage, enthusiasm, and a sense of shared purpose.
On behalf of all the international students here, thank you for allowing us to begin this new journey. It is an honor to be a part of SUSTech's advancement. May we all have a successful and rewarding year ahead!
