The Southern University of Science and Technology Education Foundation (SUSTCEF) supports the University in all of its educational, research, instructional, scientific, literary, service, charitable, and outreach endeavors.

In 2018, with its advanced development and influence, the University has seen good results in various university rankings in China and abroad, attracting widespread attention and acclaim from all sections of society.

This has seen more people and groups with ambition and insight for SUSTech’s development who wish to support and contribute positively to SUSTech through donations.

In 2018, SUSTech actively integrated resources from society in a variety of ways. With the support of SUSTCEF, achievements have been made in personnel training, teaching and research, teacher development, and further enhancement of campus infrastructure.

All of these changes have created a new look of SUSTech in 2018.

More support for SUSTech

“The future is coming. If you want a part of it, you should stand with it.” Many organizations and individuals have expressed such an aspiration while participating in activities in SUSTech or visiting our campus.

SUSTech has cooperated with CITIC Bank, Kaisa, Taizhou Financial Investment, Lenovo, BYD, Tencent, Shenzhen Haylion Technologies, Runyang and many other organizations to promote major cooperation projects such as Taizhou Hall and Runyang Stadium. 2018 has also seen the establishment of the SUSTech-Inciesa Synergetic Innovation Institute and SUSTech Intelligent Transportation Research Center to introduce social forces in support of our educational and research missions.

In order for the Alumni Association and Parent Association to play active roles, SUSTech has set up a special fund which raises funds for alumni development. It also encourages students to give back to their alma mater, while conducting micro-donation fund-raising activities at the Alumni Association Annual Meeting.

SUSTech also conducts online fund-raising throughout the campus social media networks and WeChat. As a result, it has made it easier for people to donate, encouraging students, parents and the whole society to participate in SUSTech’s development.

In 2018, SUSTCEF raised over 1800 donations, representing an increase of new donors of more than 110%.

There are more supporters of SUSTech each and every year. In 2018, SUSTech promoted its spirit to the public and the media. It has effectively pooled everybody’s strengths in order to expand its fund-raising ideas and continually grow its operational funds.

A new look for SUSTech and its increasing influence

Consistent funding for education is now critically important for most modern universities. To compare against outstanding university foundations at home and abroad, SUSTech actively builds the SUSTCEF brand, by exploring unique operational purposes for the funding, and continuously expanding SUSTech’s influence and social reputation.

SUSTech has also created an innovative sharing platform, named SUSTech Club. The platform effectively connects the resources and social capital of institutions of higher education, gathering the power, wisdom and love of society. SUSTech is creating a beneficial situation with society through industry-university-research cooperation and talent cultivation, thereby promoting the development of education & technology in China.

In order to widely publicize SUSTech and its achievements, SUSTCEF has conducted various activities to strengthen SUSTech’s image. At the beginning of 2018, the New Year Appreciation Meeting saw the launch of the “100 Entrepreneurship Mentor” program. During the summer enrollment season and graduation season, SUSTech launched an advertisement at Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport with over fifteen thousand broadcasts covering about 4.3 million people, showing the image of SUSTech to all walks of life.

In July, the “Super Cello X AI Fantasy Concert” took place. Entrepreneurs, artists, liberal arts academics and scientists gathered together to conduct cross-border exchanges and share their views. In December, the 2nd SUSTech-Green Pine Campus Relay Marathon was held. More than 80 teams brought together over one thousand elite athletes from academia, venture capital firms, science and sports, creating an exchange platform for technological talents through sports events.

In 2018, SUSTech completed the charitable foundation registration process in Hong Kong and in the coming year SUSTech will launch a series of charity events in Hong Kong to promote exchanges and contacts with all sectors overseas.

Advancing SUSTech’s research and teaching

By focusing on the feedback from all aspects of society that covers a vast range of goals and development priorities, SUSTech has been able to launch multifaceted funded projects to help introduce more outstanding teachers to SUSTech and develop its talent pipeline. It is also working on equipping its laboratories with more advanced teaching and scientific research resource facilities to produce better scientific research results for society.

In order to promote the development of top-notch innovative talents, SUSTech has given priority to developing student-funded projects and investing ample funds in student education and training.

SUSTech has also set up scholarships to support enrollment, student education and research. An example of this is the establishment of the Admissions Awards, which commended 22 advanced recruiting groups and 130 advanced individuals. Similarly, the Kaisa International Scholarship helped 2 outstanding freshmen receive 400,000 yuan in further educational funding. The establishment of a medical insurance fund also supports 418 students from families with low incomes.

SUSTech has set up a variety of different scholarships in departments across campus, such as the “Chinese Lunde Scholarship” from the Department of Finance, the “Tianmei Edinburgh Scholarship” from the Department of Chemistry, and the “Qide Scholarship” from Shuren College.

SUSTech encourages its students to take part in global competitions, such as the International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition (iGEM). Students are offered a chance to improve their professional competence, research ability and teamwork. SUSTech set up a special fund for the 2018 iGEM competition. This strong support resulted in the team winning a silver medal in the competition.

In order to promote the introduction of high-level talents and improve talent incentive mechanism and service system, SUSTech has created a “Special Fund for Talent Introduction” to attract and gather high-level innovative talents. Funds have also been created for commending outstanding faculty members and teachers, as well as supporting the SUSTech kindergarten, enhancing the overall environment for talents coming to SUSTech.

In order to actively promote industry-university-research collaboration, as part of SUSTech’s mission of giving back to the society, while expanding its influence, SUSTech builds platforms for cooperating with industry, academia and research. For example, SUSTech is building “SUSTech-Kaisa Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center” and “SUSTech-Kaisa New Material Center” with Kaisa. SUSTech is also cooperating with Shenzhen Hailiang Technology to establish the Intelligent Transportation Research Center, focusing on solving key technical issues in intelligent driving. SUSTech is building a platform for leading international innovation and entrepreneurship for young entrepreneurs, in conjunction with China Youth Entrepreneurship and Employment Foundation.

SUSTech continues to integrate academic resources and strengthen industry-university-research collaboration by holding high-level exchange meetings. Through industry-university-research collaboration institutes and personnel training, SUSTech has created a win-win situation between SUSTech and society, and given back by contributing new ideas to higher education, technological innovation and social development.

2019 will be important for SUSTech in developing an international high-level research university. SUSTech will continue to strengthen ties between the University and the society, raise funds from alumni and friends to advance its research and teaching, and improve the global communication and cooperation with SUSTech.
