The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) have agreed to work together on another project, this time cooperating with the SUSTech Institute of Microelectronics. Yesterday, Deputy Director of Shenzhen Education Bureau Xu Jianling, Deputy Head of Nanshan District Lian Cong, SUSTech Vice President Teng Jinguang, and Dean of HKU School of Engineering Christopher Chao all attended the announcement along with senior leaders from both universities. Director of the Planning and Development Office Wang Susheng presided over the ceremony.
Teng Jinguang commented that HKU is a famous university in Asia with strong academic strength while SUSTech is a young and fast-growing university. The SUSTech Institute of Microelectronics will play a vital role in the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It will integrate and share laboratory and faculty resources to promote higher education across the Greater Bay Area.
Christopher Chao noted that Shenzhen’s role as the Silicon Valley of China demands many talented individuals in microelectronics and integrated circuits. SUSTech and HKU have co-operated on numerous occasions which develop better talent pipelines for both Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
Lian Cong said that the integrated circuit industry and its associated design industry of Shenzhen are leaders in China. Based on these advantages, the SUSTech Institute of Microelectronics shall seize the opportunities to meet the strategic development needs of these industries in the Greater Bay Area.
Xu Jianling believes that the SUSTech Institute of Microelectronics will bring new opportunities and a bright future to both universities. He anticipates that the SUSTech Institute of Microelectronics will provide a positive innovative environment for the integrated circuit industry through the efficient integration of resources.
Under the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Strategic Plan, the Institute of Microelectronics is an innovative institution. It was co-founded by SUSTech and world-renowned universities, including the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the University of Hong Kong and University of Macau.
It was recently announced as a National Exemplary Microelectronics Institute. With the advantages of the integrated circuit industry in the Greater Bay Area, the SUSTech Institute of Microelectronics will gather the best educational and innovative resources, in order to build a microelectronics institute that can meet and beat the benchmarks of first-class international research-oriented universities across the globe.
