The first annual report on China’s commercialization of university and research institutes’ scientific findings (2018) was officially released at a press conference in Beijing last week. Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) is ranked fourth among mainland China universities and research institutes for the total amount of technology transferred through ownership transfer, licensing and IP-investment.
SUSTech Technology Transfer Center was also invited to join the conference. The SUSTech representatives introduced the University’s technology transfer practice. Further discussions on research commercialization were launched among representatives of universities and institutions across China.
According to the report, SUSTech was also ranked sixth among mainland China universities for the total amount of remuneration to its scientists. The annual report looked at different measures to rank mainland China universities, involving industry-university research.
The 2018 Annual Report was guided by the Department of Research Commercialization and Regional Innovation, a department within the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST). It was edited by China Science and Technology Achievement Management Research Association, the National Center for Science and Technology Evaluation, and the Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China.
MOST and the Ministry of Finance established an annual report system in 2017 to examine the transfer of China’s scientific and technological achievements.
The annual report aims to effectively regulate the commercialization of scientific and technological achievements in research institutions and universities. In 2018, 1776 research institutes and 990 universities and colleges were included in the annual report.
