January 21th. 2015 is the first day for academician Chen Shiyi to be president of the SUSTC. In the afternoon of the day, President Chen Shiyi interviewed all academic departments of SUSTC, and talked with six teachers, and visited the undergraduates from 2013 and 2014 in military training.

In the afternoon, accompanied by vice president Qin Zheng, Provost Wu Chuanyue, President Chen Shiyi came to Research Building I and Research Building II, which respectively talked with the professors of biology department, chemistry department, physics department, electron and electrical engineering department, material science and engineering department, financial mathematics and financial engineering department. He listened to the working condition report of teaching and scientific research of each department and was welcomed by professors. Professors introduced their school and work life, research direction, working condition and existed questions to President Chen. 

In the forum, President Chen Shiyi made a bow to all professors and paid his highest tributes to them for daring to be the first who joining the SUSTC. He also points that the SUSTC has important mission shouldered on exploring the modern higher education system with Chinese characters and top-notch innovative personnel training model. This university should insist on managing the school by reform and innovation continually, all professors should take full of confidence in the future of this university. President Chen said: “Today, we meet each other. I come to the SUSTC; I am the one of SUSTC. By 5 to 10 years, we can develop SUSTC to be first-class university. There is Harvard University, MIT, Caltech, and Stanford in the USA. There is Peking University, Tsinghua University in China which also needs the kind of innovative university like SUSTC. Our university will pay close attention to solve the issues professors concerns.

Aiming at the questions, such as graduate admission, postdoctoral center, research platform construction and other questions, President Chen showed that the school will make a monographic study to settle one by one.

Soon afterwards, accompanied by Provost Wu Chuanyue and Han Wei-Deputy Director of preparatory and planning office, President Chen Shiyi visited the military training undergraduates 2013 and 2014. The students warmly welcomed President Chen Shiyi present.

President Chen Shiyi was so happy to see the students with such high spirits. He said: “The school development first relies on teaching and scientific, then students. The student is the main body of school. The development of the school depends on the cultivated students. Each graduate stands for the level of the school; we need to pay attention to the growth and development of each student. There are some famous universities in Northern China, such as Peking University, Tsinghua University. In the innovative city-Shenzhen City in Southern China, we aim at building an international and high-level research university.

With enthusiastic mood and constant applause, the students were inspired by President Chen Shiyi. They look forward to the glorious future of the university and pay their respect to this new president by admiring view.

President said goodbye to the cute students, and then devoted himself to the rush work at once.
