On December 27, 2015, the 2015 Annual Conference of Chemical Committee of Association of Thousand Talents Program kicked off at SUSTC. The conference was hosted by the Association of Thousand Talents Program, and organized by the South University of Science and Technology of China (SUSTC). Present were Zheng Xiuyu, Deputy Director of the Organization Department of the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee; Liu Ke, Chairman of the Chemical Committee of the Association of Thousand Talents Program; as well as leaders of SUSTC and heads of SUSTC’s schools and departments, such as Li Ming, Chairman of University Council and President Chen Shiyi. At the conference, nearly 60 chemical experts in the Thousand Talents Program will focus on emerging strategic industries preferentially developed by Shenzhen, such as new pharmaceuticals, new materials and new chemicals. Involving high-end dialogues, professional forums as well as exchanges on innovation and entrepreneurship, the conference aimed to be a high-level professional conference for academic exchange, technical discussion and project cooperation. The conference was of positive significance to the integrated development of Shenzhen’s relevant technologies, industries and resources, fit in with the characteristics of Shenzhen as a high-tech innovative city, accorded with Shenzhen’s strategic plan for industrial development, and will provide enlightenment and reference for the development of Shenzhen’s relevant industries.

The Association of Thousand Talents Program is a branch of the Western Returned Scholars Association, Chinese Overseas-Educated Scholars Association, as well as a non-profit social organization that experts introduced by the “Thousand Talents Program” initiated and constituted on a voluntary basis. The association has brought together all experts in the “Thousand Talents Program” to exchange sentiments and ideas, discuss cooperation, make suggestions and serve the society. The association has united with and served overseas returned talents, implemented the strategy of prospering the country by technology and talents, and contributed wisdom and power to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation as a new force for national innovation and entrepreneurship, thus becoming a talent association with great influence, wide radiation, high level and strong appeal. As a major professional committee of the association, the Chemical Committee has a grand concentration of talents and authorities, including 385 members of the “Thousand Talents Program” in disciplinary fields such as new chemicals, new pharmaceuticals and new materials.

The conference was strongly supported by the Organization Department of the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee, SUSTC and Nanshan District. At the conference, Li will deliver an opening speech, and Chen will introduce SUSTC. Liu will make a presentation on energy and environment, and Zhang Xumu, dean of the Department of Chemistry, SUSTC, will make a presentation on new pharmaceuticals. Parallel forums will be held on the afternoon of December 27. Liu, Zhang and Prof. Wu Jingshen will chair the Clean Energy & Chemicals Forum, the New Pharmaceuticals Forum and the New Materials Forum respectively.

The conference fit in with the characteristics of Shenzhen as a high-tech innovative city, accorded with Shenzhen’s strategic plan for industrial development, was of positive significance to the integrated development of Shenzhen’s relevant technologies, and will provide enlightenment and reference for the development of Shenzhen’s relevant industries.
