The two-day “New Year Fluid Mechanics Seminar” was held at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) from February 13 to 14, 2016, with the participation of over 40 experts and scholars from prestigious universities and research institutions at home. Yang Wei, chairman of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, president of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; and researcher Meng Qingguo, executive deputy director of the Department of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, NSFC attended the seminar as special guests.

At the opening ceremony, Chen Shiyi, president of SUSTech, extended warm welcome to the attendees on behalf of SUSTech. As an annual event with a history of over 10 years, the “New Year Fluid Mechanics Seminar” has created a top-notched academic exchange platform for domestic fluid mechanics experts and scholars, said him. Yang spoke highly of the high level of the seminar, offering guiding opinion on the further development of fluid mechanics. Meng made suggestions on the layout of the disciplinary development of fluid mechanics in China according to the “thirteenth five-year” development plan of NSFC.

Apart from the basic issues of fluid mechanics, the attendees exchanged ideas on the key issues of fluid mechanics in fields such as aerospace, ocean and combustion. Among the attendees were academic leaders and backbone from universities and research institutions such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Zhejiang University, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai University, National University of Defense Technology, Harbin Institute of Technology, Dalian University of Technology, Ocean University of China, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center, and SUSTech.
