Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) welcomed Duan Runyao, director of the Baidu Institute for Quantum Computing to campus. He came to give the 210th lecture in the SUSTech Lecture Series. Duan Runyao gave an intriguing lecture entitled “Diagrams and Quantum”. Director Yu Dapeng of the Shenzhen Institute for Quantum Science and Engineering presided over the lecture.

Duan Runyao is currently the Director of the Baidu Institute of Quantum Computing. He is a Professor at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and the Director of the Centre for Quantum Software and Information (QSI). In July 2012, he received an Australian Research Council (ARC) Future Fellow and Professor.

Since 2001, Professor Duan has been working in the field of quantum information theory. He has made some fundamental and methodological contributions in the areas of quantum operation discrimination, quantum state discrimination, zero-error communication via noisy quantum channels, and quantum entanglement transformation. In 2016, Professor Duan was the first to put forward the complete information interpretation in graph theory, having worked in cooperation with German mathematician Andreas Winter and UCL Professor of Physics of Information Simone Severini on the Lovász number.

Professor Duan started his lecture using Pythagorean Theorem and other mathematical theories. He used this information as a base to introduce the history of graph theory and classical graph theory problems. Duan explained the applications of graph theory in information and quantum computation. By explaining quantum entanglement transformation with graphs, he was able to come up with a new concept. Duan believes that this novel idea is an important direction that can be used to explore quantum information and will be of great research value.

At the end of the lecture, Professor Duan introduced the Baidu Institute of Quantum Computing and its research foci. During the Q & A session, the students enthusiastically asked questions and exchanged their ideas with Professor Duan.
