On 28th March 2019, the Ministry of Education issued a notification about filing and approval results of 2018 undergraduate majors in colleges and universities. Three undergraduate majors were approved at SUSTech. So far, Southern University of Science and Technology has 29 undergraduate majors, covering science, engineering, and medicine, which optimizes the professional structure through further steps. Those majors are:

  • Clinical Medicine (course code 100201K);
  • Robotics Engineering (course code 080803T); and
  • Intelligence Science and Technology (course code 080907T).

The approval of Clinical Medicine represents a new stage of comprehensive development of science, engineering, and medicine for SUSTech. This new major will enhance the quality of medical care across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area while improving the core competitiveness of SUSTech. The Clinical Medicine major will also satisfy the strategic development needs of a healthy Shenzhen and a healthy China. Establishing an integrated and interdisciplinary “new medicine” discipline is of great significance to the economic and social development of SUSTech, Shenzhen, Guangdong and China.

Both the robotics and intelligent manufacturing majors are critical symbols of national scientific and technological innovation. They are nationally strategic industries in the Greater Bay Area. The approval of both Robotics Engineering and Intelligent Science and Technology marks the integration of the pace of technological development with respect to the new smart era. These majors will train new engineering professionals, preparing them for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

In 2018, SUSTech became the fastest university in China to become a Ph.D. authorized unit. SUSTech currently has a total of 29 undergraduate majors across 14 schools and departments, with 12 degrees in science, 13 in engineering, 3 in economics and 1 in medicine.
