Mathematics Dept holds strategy seminar

The Department of Mathematics at Southern University of Science and Technology held its 2019 spring strategy seminar at the end of March. SUSTech President Chen Shiyi and Vice President Tang Tao attended the meeting along with 60 people from across the Department of Mathematics. The seminar was chaired by Director and Chair Professor Wang Xiaoming.

President Chen Shiyi emphasized the importance of teaching basic courses properly. He pointed out that the Department should pay attention to the international influence of mathematics. President Chen Shiyi encouraged faculty members to produce high-quality papers and participate in international conferences and editorial committees of renowned academic journals.

Vice President Tang Tao focused on mathematics education and anticipated that the Department of Mathematics would continue to explore internal reforms of its educational model.

Chair Professor Wang Xiaoming spoke about the development of the talent pipeline within the Department of Mathematics. He highlighted the importance of improving the Department’s ESI subject ranking, and expected that his colleagues would work together to contribute to SUSTech’s goal of becoming a “Double First-Class” university.

Deputy Directors Li Caiheng and Li Jingzhi provided their perspectives for improvement within the Department of Mathematics, while Jiang Xuejun, the head of the mathematics student work, updated the seminar on the situation of undergraduate education and the future employment opportunities for mathematicians.
