On the afternoon of April 27, 2016, experts from Guangdong Academic Degrees Committee visited Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) and carried out a two-day on-site review of SUSTech as a bachelor degree conferring unit for new majors. SUSTech was ratified as a bachelor’s degree conferring unit covering ten undergraduate majors, including physics, chemistry, materials science and engineering, financial mathematics, biotechnology, bioinformatics, biological science, microelectronic science and engineering, photoelectric information science and engineering as well as communication engineering.

On the morning of April 28, 2016, Xing Feng, Deputy Director-General of Guangdong Provincial Department of Education, took part in the review with 15 professors from universities in Guangdong. University leaders including Li Ming, Chairman of University Council, Chen Shiyi, President of SUSTech, Qin Zheng, Wu Chuanyue and Tang Tao, Vice Presidents of SUSTech along with leaders and professor representatives from all departments attended the symposium.

During the symposium, Xing Feng pointed out that, according to “Regulations on Academic Degrees of the People’s Republic of China”, upon the first graduates’ graduation, a new university focusing on undergraduate education should apply to be authorized as a bachelor’s degree awarding academic body, and shall be evaluated by the provincial expert committee. And if the university is approved after the evaluation, it will be submitted to the State Council for record. He also added that, since its establishment, led and supported by the Ministry of Education and the governments at different levels, SUSTech had taken the talent cultivation as its core task and had been exploring how to build modern university systems and innovative talent cultivation models drawing on the international standards.

The expert group highly appraised SUSTech’s achievements within a short period and SUSTech leaders answered the experts’ questions and inquiries.

Later, experts listened to the reports on the construction of various majors including physics, chemistry, material science and engineering, and made field trips to different departments.

In the afternoon, the experts reviewed the public facilities including the sand table model of SUSTech construction and planning, the library, the labs, the student canteens, the reading rooms and the playground.

In addition, the experts also organized symposiums for teachers and students so as to better understand the teacher resources and the student’s living conditions.

On the morning of April 29, 2016, the experts evaluated and gave feedbacks regarding the new majors and the unit after attending courses randomly, consulting reference material and interviewing. Then they had a meeting to summarize the results. Prof. Ouyang Qian, director of the group, said that with a clear goal and a proper positioning, SUSTech boasted excellent education quality as it focused on science and engineering, had appropriate majors, highlighted the construction of teachers’ teams, possessed high-quality scientific researches and teaching standards, and fostered a fine academic atmosphere.

Besides, Xing Feng praised SUSTech’s development and expressed his expectation for SUSTech’s future achievements. He also said that Guangdong Academic Degrees Committee and Guangdong Provincial Department of Education would consistently concern and support the construction and development of SUSTech.
