Earlier today, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) launched the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. SUSTech President Chen Shiyi and University Council Vice Chairperson Li Fengliang both spoke at the launch. Attendees included faculty members and leaders from the Center for Language Education, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Institute of Advanced Studies in Social Sciences, the Arts Center and the Higher Education Research Center. University Council Vice Chairperson Li Fengliang hosted the ceremony.

SUSTech President Chen Shiyi fully affirmed the preparatory work of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. He said that China is making every effort to promote the development of a new era of education in engineering, medical science, agricultural science, and liberal arts. SUSTech is committed to the development of distinctive liberal arts education, in order to inherit the power of thought and culture while cultivating scientists and engineers with critical thinking, imagination, and creativity. This would realize the sustainable development of personnel training and effective operation of SUSTech.

President Chen Shiyi pointed out that the liberal arts construction at SUSTech has always adhered to the principle of “small and precise, high level, distinctive, moderate scale, and outstanding advantages.” It is committed to building close relationships with science and engineering. It combines the characteristics of humanities and social sciences by providing high-level liberal arts education for science and engineering students. It will play a more important role in the overall development of the SUSTech community, while better serving the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Dean Chen Yuehong of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences said that the School will always be consistent with the goals of SUSTech and adhere to its three main development directions. It will also provide first-class education for humanities, social sciences, education, art and language. Dean Chen Yuehong added that the School would also concentrate on the development of a unique liberal arts department with precise and focused interdisciplinary development.

University Council Vice Chairperson Li Fengliang hoped that the leadership team at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences would remain united in leading the faculty and staff. He also anticipated that the School would continue to provide high-level liberal arts education across campus in developing SUSTech.
