GUO Yurong was appointed on June 28, 2016 as the Chairwoman of University Council of SUSTech, and to serve concurrently as the Director of Education Bureau. 

The appointment was announced by Shenzhen Municipal Party Committee and Guangdong Provincial Party Committee at swearing-in ceremony, hosted by President Chen Shiyi.

On behalf of the Provincial Party Committee, Zheng Qingshun delivered a speech. He affirmed the work and contribution of Dr. Li Ming. With his contribution, the university put on a vibrant and positive scene. 

Zheng Qingshun expressed that constructing SUSTech was an important measure for Guangdong Province and Shenzhen City to build high-level universities and that the appointment of Guo Yurong as Council Chairman of SUSTech was not only in line with overall strategy but also the actual demand. He hoped that SUSTech would seize the valuable opportunity that Guangdong Province and Shenzhen City would jointly build high-level science and engineering universities, follow the macro strategy of “Constructing International High-level Research-oriented Universities by Three Steps ”, as well as actively explore the path and promotion plan in advance to provide the driving force for the national and social development. 

The new Council Chairwoman of SUSTech Guo Yurong spoke at the meeting. She promised: firstly, to study and carry out research carefully; secondly, to conscientiously perform the duties, to grasp the team building and to fully support the work of President Chen Shiyi; to change the concepts and to strive to make SUSTech a unique university attracting Chinese and overseas talents; thirdly, to create a fair and harmonious environment; to strengthen the supervision of key positions and links and to create an entrepreneurial environment. She also promised to fulfill duties, to make every effort to live up to the public’s trust, to fulfill the mission, and to unite all faculty and students so as to build a glorious future for SUSTech together with President Chen Shiyi.

Dr. Li Ming, the former Chairman of University Council of SUSTech, delivered a speech in the conference. Dr. Li firmly believed that, under the leadership of Ms. Guo Yurong and President Chen Shiyi, faculty and students would work as one to overcome more difficulties and make greater strides forward in spite of various challenges. 

President Chen Shiyi, on behalf of school’s leadership team, faculty, and students, delivered a speech. He extended sincere thanks for Dr. Li for his contribution to the development of the university. President Chen added, Ms. Guo being appointed the Chairman of University Council was a full demonstration of Municipal Government’s support to the university.’s reform and development. Under the leadership of Ms. Guo Yurong and President Chen Shiyi, SUSTech will accelerate to improve educational quality, and press ahead the practice of “Enriching knowledge, innovation, and entrepreneurship”. 

There were altogether more than 100 guests present at the ceremony, including officials from Shenzhen Municipal Government, SUSTech’s leadership team and faculty members.
