Over the weekend, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) and the Shenzhen Grubbs Institute hosted the first Shenzhen Grubbs Institute –Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (SIOC-CAS) Seminar. SUSTech University Council Vice Chairperson Li Fengliang, SIOC-CAS Director Tang Yong, and Deputy Secretary Liu Fei of the SIOC-CAS Party Committee attended the seminar. Department head of Chemistry Zheng Zhiping and Executive Director of the Shenzhen Grubbs Institute presided over the seminar.

SUSTech University Council Vice Chairperson Li Fengliang said that the Guangdong Provincial and Shenzhen Municipal Governments are very supportive of the development of basic disciplines, especially chemistry disciplines. As the first domestic research institution named after a Nobel Prize Laureate, the Shenzhen Grubbs Research Institute shoulders the important task of the development of domestic chemistry.

SIOC-CAS Director Tang Yong added that the long-term development and innovation of SIOC-CAS is inseparable from the exchanges and learning between its peer institutions. The trip to Shenzhen is a good opportunity for the organic institute to learn from the valuable experience of other scientific research institutions. This seminar will enhance academic exchanges and interactions with SUSTech.

The seminar saw discussions of the latest developments and trends in catalytic and asymmetric synthesis in organic chemistry. Experts in associated fields were active participants in the seminar, with many SIOC-CAS experts providing academic reports. After the seminar, the SIOC-CAS experts visited the Shenzhen Grubbs Institute.

The Shenzhen Grubbs Research Institute is committed to building an international, open and top-level research institution for China and the world through the development of a small molecule catalytic center and a polymer material research center. It takes into account the research of basic disciplines and applied sciences. SIOC-CAS is the top domestic research institution in organic chemistry and the mainstay of organic chemistry in China. The seminar has enhanced cooperation between both sides in scientific research and personnel training, and promoted the continuous development of the domestic chemical research field.
