Over the weekend, the 2018-19 Global Finals of the Huawei ICT Contest was hosted at its Songshan Lake Base in Dongguan, north of Shenzhen. Three sophomore students (Guan Yi, Zhu Qi and Ge Chengjie) won a 3rd prize, under the instruction of Professor Yu Hao of the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) School of Microelectronics.

Their entry, titled “Smart Agriculture Based on Huawei’s IoT Cloud Platform,” aimed to realize real-time monitoring and collection of data on the growth environment of crops through the intelligent platform of Huawei’s NB-IOT development board, through ModelArts AI Cloud. Their platform applied deep learning to identify crop diseases to make corresponding measures. Understanding this is conducive to solving crop diseases found by farmers who have experience in traditional forms of agriculture.

The Huawei ICT contest is divided into practical and innovation competitions. The practical competition is for the global ICT institutes and universities that are willing to become Huawei ICT institutes. The Innovation Competition is aimed at partner universities, known as Huawei ICT Institute Innovative Talents Center, adopting the invitation registration system.

Since its launch in June 2018, the contest has attracted more than 100,000 students from more than 1,600 institutions in 61 countries and regions. A total of 147 students from 49 teams from 30 countries and regions qualified for the finals.

In the regional competition in China, 10 teams qualified for the finals, along with competing teams from the United Kingdom and Singapore.
