Last week, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) and Rice University from the United States held a joint workshop that sought to establish cooperative scientific research and joint PhD Program.
The meeting was attended by SUSTech Vice President Teng Jinguang, Dean of College of Engineering at SUSTech Xu Zhenghe, Dean of the George R. Brown School of Engineering at Rice University Reginald DesRoches, Professor Pedro Alvarez, member of the National Academy of Engineering, and professors from both universities.
SUSTech Vice President Teng Jinguang said that everyone is welcome to come to the vibrant city of Shenzhen and the dynamic young university of SUSTech. He hoped that the workshop promotes more cooperation between SUSTech and Rice University. The workshop covered four specific fields, nanotechnology-enabled water treatment, biomedical engineering, advanced materials, and smart cities.
SUSTech Dean of the College of Engineering Xu Zhenghe said that universities need to innovate in key areas in order to improve university’s strength in scientific research. He reiterated the importance of supporting both national and international goals, pointing to the wide range of international partnerships that SUSTech has already developed.
Dean of the George R. Brown School of Engineering at Rice University Reginald DesRoches believed that there are many similarities between SUSTech and Rice University. The support for interdisciplinary research and studies is consistent between SUSTech and Rice University, and both universities have many departments in their Schools of Engineering. Dean Reginald DesRoches expressed his strong willingness to cooperate with SUSTech in many key engineering fields.
