On the morning of September 9, SUSTech held the opening ceremony of military training for 2016 freshmen in Shenzhen National Defense Education and Training Base and started their college life. President Chen Shiyi, Director Cui Zhaokun from the Base, counselors of the colleges and all freshmen attended the ceremony.

The opening ceremony began with the national anthem. After only one night’s training, freshmen presented their high spirits with orderly arrays and straight standing postures.

2016 freshmen representative Li Ziwen gave a speech at the ceremony. He said on behalf of all the students that in the following eight-day training, they would work hard, follow directions, observe rules, help each other and carry forward soldiers’ spirit.

Cui Zhaokun delivers a speech
Cui Zhaokun addressed the ceremony that military training can not only build willpower but also enhance ideological determination. He hopes that freshmen can work hard, care for others, improve ideological and political consciousness, enhance national security awareness, master basic military knowledge, improve comprehensive qualities and strive to become outstanding socialism builders and successors. He also asked instructors to be strict with daily training, competitions and evaluations to reach the best training result.

President Chen Shiyi expressed high respect to all the instructors and heartfelt thanks to leaders of National Defense Education and Training Base who have long been supporting the military training of SUSTech. He said the eight-day training was aimed at helping students to cultivate good qualities and inspire team spirit so as to better deal with busy and colorful life on campus. He said military training, as the first lesson in university, was crucial to their journeys of life, so he hoped that freshmen would take it seriously and act like a soldier. He asked students to obey orders and be strict with themselves, develop good habits, be ready for hardships, be confident with difficulties, and bear team spirit and collective sense in mind. President Chen Shiyi also reminded freshmen to pay attention to safety, encourage and learn from each other, with a view to becoming creative and responsible college students in the new era.

After the ceremony, President Chen Shiyi led a team to inspect students’ dormitories.
It is reported that during the military training period, freshmen would live with their counselors. Freshmen orientation, which includes a special report on emergency rescue given by SUSTech Emergency Rescue Team, will be conducted during the training.
