On the afternoon of September 12, 2016 SUSTech Farewell Ceremony Newly-enlisted Students was held in the activity room of Shuren College. Guo Yurong, Chairwoman of University Council, Yu Furong, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of Nanshan District, Shenzhen Municipality and Political Commissar of People’s Armed Forces Department, Han Wei, Deputy Director of Preparation Office and Director of Human Resource, heads of the Office of Students Affairs, deans of Colleges, and faculty representatives attended the Ceremony.

After rigorous selection, Zhao Jianshen, a senior from Zhiren College, Fu Jiaqi, a junior from Zhicheng College, and 2016 freshman Li Bohan were chosen to join the Chinese People’s Liberation Army with honor.

Guo Yurong expressed her heartfelt congratulations to the three students, who were about to embark on the journey of safeguarding the country. She pointed out that joining the army meant responsibility, and students of SUSTech should shoulder the responsibility. She expected that the three students would perform well in the army, just as they did in their studies. She also hoped that they would set examples for other students and come back to school safe and sound with the care and expectation from the faculty of SUSTech.

Yu Furong offered congratulations to the students as well. He said that the selected new soldiers were cream of the crop. He thanked SUSTech for attaching importance to the national defense education. 2016 witnesses the first year of SUSTech students joining the army. He believed that there would be more students following suit. He also hoped that the enlisted students would build their willpower in the army and come back with honor.

Three soldiers-to-be addressed the audience at the Ceremony. Zhao Jianshen said that although life in the army would surely be tough, he looked forward to it. He gave special thanks to SUSTech, saying that he would always remember the three years in SUSTech, keep studying, fulfill duties and realize larger goals back in SUSTech in two years.

As one of the first students of SUSTech joining the army, Fu Jiaqi was excited and happy about the coming military life. He yearned to experience the disciplinary life in the army and win glory for SUSTech as a soldier.

As a 2016 freshman, Li Bohan said: “The military life will hone my willpower and broaden my horizon. I am privileged to be one of the first SUSTech students to join the army, and I hope I can contribute my part to the national defense.”
