SUSTech undergraduate program review takes place

In June, the Ministry of Education came to Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) to conduct an undergraduate program review. SUSTech University Council Chairperson Guo Yurong and SUSTech President Chen Shiyi were joined by senior leaders across campus and the meeting was chaired by Deputy Director Li Zhi from the Higher Education Teaching Evaluation Center of the Ministry of Education.

Chairperson Guo Yurong and President Chen Shiyi both spoke about the importance of the role the Ministry of Education played in supporting SUSTech as a pioneer in reforming higher education in China.

Guo Yurong focused on the outcomes of the program review and how SUSTech would learn from it.

President Chen Shiyi pointed out that the program review would assist SUSTech in its continued goal of training innovative leaders for the new era that would support strategic industries in the Greater Bay Area.

Former President of Peking University and head of the program review team Lin Jianhua supported their comments, and assured them that the review sought to improve the situation at SUSTech for the betterment of undergraduate education on campus, and society as a whole.

Deputy Director of the Education Supervision Bureau at the Ministry of Education Wei Huan added that a high-level research team would further promote the high-quality development of SUSTech. The continued development of SUSTech’s undergraduate education would see it play an increasingly important role in the future.

Director Fan Wei of the Higher Education Teaching Evaluation Center of the Ministry of Education spoke of the overall strategic needs for SUSTech to support China’s national talent training programs for the new era. She acknowledged the importance of maintaining every university’s unique features while supporting its students and the wider university community.

Several senior SUSTech leaders spoke about SUSTech’s distinctive highlights, before members of the expert program review group talked about their own universities and their experiences with the approach of the Ministry of Education.
