Earlier this week, the New Engineering Education Summer Course cum Da Vinci Challenge Camp – 2019 Summer Camp of SIDM (“Da Vinci Challenge Camp”) held its International Business Plan Competition (IBPC). The IBPC competition, run by the School of Systems Design and Intelligent Manufacturing (SDIM) at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), is a collaborative project with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland (HES-SO).

22 campers from HKUST and HES-SO participated in a 10-day immersive business study module with 19 campers from SUSTech. The competition was conducted around a commercial road show, with students working to demonstrate well-thought out projects themed around “Healthier Living.” The projects were judged by three eminent judges from top enterprises, who listened and evaluated each project presentation.

The Da Vinci Challenge Camp is composed of three sections. The core section, SDIM NEE Summer Course is from 24 June to 2 August. Students have completed the introductory stage of the course, and now have been working on the project development phase. IBPC is one of the 3 sections of Challenge Camp. The 3rd section, the “2019 RoboMaster Summer Camp (for high school students), will start later in July.

First prize went to the MindBridge group, who developed an app that provided a comprehensive and instant communication platform linking patients with their psychologists. Medical professionals would be able to get a better understanding of their patient’s state of mind and provide more timely counseling, while enhancing and increasing existing clinical data.

Second prize was claimed by the Pilock group, who focused on the improper use of safety restraints by high-altitude workers. The smart device would transmit data to safety supervisors in real time, ensuring improved safety for employees working high above the ground.

The Eye Elf group earned third place, with the goal to alleviate children’s myopia. The app would be used on almost any products with a screen, specifically controlling the distance a user is from a screen, eye posture and screen time.

According to the curriculum design of NEE at SDIM, students must master interdisciplinary subjects within engineering, product design, business and the liberal arts.

The IBPC is a try that SDIM would like SUSTech students to experience the study of business module with global students. There will be complete business modules in SDIM’s future NEE Curriculum.
