The Guangdong Provincial Social Sciences Federation recently announced the 10 recipients of the Excellent Social Scientists award for 2019. Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) Vice Chairperson Li Fengliang was one of them.
This award rewards outstanding academics whose achievements have had great influence both at home and abroad, or have made pioneering achievements in basic theoretical research.
Li Fengliang is SUSTech University Council Vice Chairperson and Chair Professor of the Center for Humanities and social sciences. He was the Vice President of Shenzhen University and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Shenzhen University (Humanities and Social Sciences) from 2008 to 2016.
Vice Chairperson Li Fengliang is also the chief expert of major projects for the National Social Science Foundation and a member of the Teaching Steering Committee of Art & Theory Specialty of the Ministry for Education.
Vice Chairperson Li Fengliang is focused on literary theory criticism and comparative literature research. His published works have covered areas such as novel poetics, critical theory and foreign Chinese poetry. He has been praised as a pioneer in critical literal theory of foreign Chinese scholars.
After arriving at SUSTech in 2016, Vice Chairperson Li Fengliang has promoted the development of a unique liberal arts curriculum at SUSTech. He has devoted himself to the provision of a high-level liberal arts education for STEM students by integrating science and technology with humanities, archaeology, creative writing and the arts.
“In my opinion, the atmosphere of emphasizing culture and the liberal arts in Shenzhen city is becoming stronger. The concept of ‘Humanities’ is also becoming an important proposition for the construction of the Greater Bay Area,” said Li Fengliang in an interview with a local newspaper.
“As scholars, we should devote ourselves to promote the humanities and social science both academically and for the public in Shenzhen and Guangdong,”
The Guangdong Provincial Excellent Social Scientists are selected every three years, and seek to fully mobilize the enthusiasm and creativity in the humanities and social sciences, in order to better develop the field in Guangdong Province.
