SUSTech Summer Sessions | Education Beyond Borders
Chris Edwards | 08/19/2019

Throughout the summer semester and summer vacation, students from Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) have spread their wings and spent time around the world, participating in internships and volunteer activities, both within mainland China and around the world. Students have been studying in top universities, interning in world-class companies and helping the less fortunate. These activities have seen SUSTech students broaden their horizons, consolidate their theoretical knowledge and exercise their abilities.

The Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering worked with top companies to send students to study or intern within key units. Students traveled to the United State and different parts of mainland China, and were involved in topics such as 3D printing, metal additive manufacturing, zirconia ceramic processing, laser processing and electrochemical jet processing.

The School of Environmental Science and Engineering organized numerous internships around mainland China, focusing on water pollution and associated environmental fields such as geology and geomorphology. They also arranged for students to travel to the United States to learn about soil and groundwater pollution prevention and control.

The Department of Ocean Science and Engineering took students to Zhanjiang in southwest Guangdong Province. The students took part in navigational and observation activities, enduring some tough sea conditions to collect precious data samples to study the hydrological and biogeochemical environmental changes in the Pearl River Delta.

The Department of Earth and Space Sciences organized students to undertake internships at several sites across mainland China. Students embraced their curiosity and enterprising scientific spirit, adding a wonderful touch to their college career.

Shuren College arranged 26 volunteers to form a teaching team. They came to Dahu Middle School in Lianping County, Heyuan City, and began a 12-day teaching tour. This is the 5th year that Shuren College has carried out teaching and poverty alleviation activities in Lianping.

Throughout the 12 days, the “teacher intern” taught classes such as physics, biology, dance, emergency rescue, painting and physical education. The Shuren College students found living in the rural community to be an enlightening experience. One student noted the importance of the struggle as part of their personal development, reflecting that life in the country is vastly different from their own lives in Shenzhen.

Shude College had more than 200 students and teachers taking part in archaeological work across China in 35 teams. They took the opportunity to work at the cutting edge of scientific and technological research section. They also explored Shenzhen’s economic and social development over the last 40 years of reform and opening up. Other students expanded their cultural knowledge through participating in Lingnan culture.
