Qin Boyi Interpreted Technological Innovation and Humanism

 In the afternoon of October 12, 2016, at the 84th SUSTech Class, Qin Boyi (well-known pharmacologist) gave a lecture themed Culture Leads Technological Innovation. Based on his own experience, Mr. Qin clarified the relations among technological development, innovation spirit and humanistic quality. The lecture was presided over by Prof. Chen Yuehong (Director of Humanity Center) of SUSTech. 

Qin Boyi, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and former President of Academy of Military Medical Sciences, achieved outstanding results in the research of nerve gas prevention tablets, narcotic painkillers and opiate rehabilitation drugs after his study in the Soviet Union. 

 Mr. Qin mentioned the importance of innovative country and talents from President Xi’s stresses. Upon reviewing the development of western science and technology, he said: “The advance of science and technology usually follows ideological emancipation.” With reference to his overseas study, Mr. Qin clarified that the free competition of marker economy pushes technology forward and academic freedom drives the scientific development. 

Concerning the influence of spiritual culture to technological innovation, Mr. Qin reviewed several important ideological emancipations in the history with an affirmation on their effects. “The humanities and natural science should be perfectly matched” in order to give full play to the science and technology. Meanwhile, since the humanities is of great significance in life, the required basic qualities for innovative talents can be found in humanities. 

o cultivate the humanities, in Mr. Qin’s opinion, education, science and technology play an essential role. For SUSTech’s students, he proposed that “study should be made independently and continuously for practical needs and with features” and guided students in effective learning and “successful selection” with his experience. ”
