On the afternoon of November 16, Yuan Baocheng, Vice Governor of Guangdong Province, visited Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) for a survey on research system innovation. Zhong Xuanhui, Deputy Secretary-General of the People’s Government of Guangdong Province; Huang Ningsheng, Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province and Zhang Hu, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee and Executive Vice Mayor of Shenzhen accompanied Yuan for the survey. Council Chairperson Guo Yurong and President Chen Shiyi of SUSTech, as well as heads of relevant departments of SUSTech were involved in the survey and attended a meeting.

At the meeting, Guo thanked the provincial committee, provincial government, municipal committee and municipal government for their strong support to SUSTech, and thanked Yuan for his visit. SUSTech is a young university full of vitality which aims to become a world top research university, she said, expecting SUSTech to take root in Shenzhen, base itself in Guangdong and develop steadily, in a bid to become a university serving the construction of an innovation-oriented country, serving the social and economic development of Guangdong Province and serving Shenzhen in building a modern, international and innovative city.

Chen Shiyi reports on the development of SUSTech

Chen reported on SUSTech’s development plan and situation of “building a world top research university in China” from SUSTech’s mission and goal, management system and operation mechanism, discipline and degree program construction, high-level talent team, undergraduate enrollment and education, graduate education application and co-training, research findings and funds, globalization and high-level science & engineering university construction, with emphasis on SUSTech’s exploration in research system innovation and research finding transformation.

Zhang said, Shenzhen needs top-notch research universities to support it in developing into an internationally influential technology industry innovation center. On behalf of the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee and the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government, he thanked the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee and the People’s Government of Guangdong Province for their strong support to Shenzhen’s technological and educational undertakings. He expected SUSTech to continue developing with the support of Guangdong’s special program for high-level science & engineering university construction, conduct pilot practice in technological system reform and production-learning-research platform construction, and play a greater role in Guangdong’s technological innovation platform system.

Yuan made remarks after listening to the report on SUSTech’s development, speaking highly of the rapid development of SUSTech. As a high-level research university the province and the city pin great hope on, SUSTech has made painstaking and effective efforts, and conducted active exploration in such aspects as governance system, system and mechanism innovation, high-level talent pooling, talent training, enterprise-university-institute cooperation and innovation & entrepreneurship. In the next period, SUSTech should seize the strategic opportunity from the construction of high-level science & engineering universities in Guangdong and the vigorous development of education in Shenzhen, highlight its advantages and features, adhere to reform and innovation, and make persistent efforts to achieve its goal based on the need of national and regional development. He pledged that the provincial committee and government will continue to create conditions to support the leap of SUSTech in such aspects as research system reform, key laboratory construction and talent program, requiring SUSTech to work out a systematic scheme for research system innovation and play an exemplary role in Guangdong. He pinned great hope on the future of SUSTech. “Shenzhen has developed into a great city over the past three decades, I believe that SUSTech will become a great university in 30 years!” he said.
