On the afternoon of November 19, the Panel Meeting for SUSTech’s Research Vessel (R/V) Shenzhen was held at No. 401 meeting room of the administrative building. Present were 12 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), including Jin Zhenmin, Zhang Guowei, Yao Zhenxing, Shi Yaolin, Yang Shufeng, Jin Xianglong, Zhang Si, Li Jiabiao, Chen Dake, Jiao Nianzhi, Chen Xiaofei and Yu Dapeng, as well as renowned domestic marine and land scientists, including three professors (Qian Peiyuan, Zhou Huaiyang, Zhang Huai) and three researchers (Lin Jian, Huang Li, Zhou Ning). Zhao Yusheng, Director of the Office of Research and Chen Yongshun, Chair of the Department of Ocean Science and Engineering, SUSTech delivered reports. Jin Xianglong chaired the meeting.

Organized by the Department of Ocean Science and Engineering, SUSTech, the meeting aimed to discuss the issues of marine science, SUSTech’s oceanographic construction and development, as well as SUSTech’s application for research vessel (R/V).
Zhao introduced SUSTech to the attendees. Chen introduced SUSTech’s oceanographic development blueprint and the idea of research vessel.
After listening to the reports, the attendees said that Shenzhen has regional advantage in research vessel, and its application for ship fabrication accords with the national strategy of marine power development and the strategic demand for regional economic development. They suggested that SUSTech should fabricate an ocean-going research vessel, build a first-class oceanographic discipline, achieve the grand goal of becoming a world top research university, serve the needs of national strategies such as “marine power” and “Maritime Silk Road”, as well as Shenzhen’s strategy of building a “strong marine city”.
