From October 11 to 12, 2016, the Second National Forum on Emerging Wireless Technologies and Open Innovations was held at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), which also sponsored the Forum. Sherman Shen (Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering and Fellow of Royal Society of Canada), Zhang Jihong (Director of Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau), Liang Yongsheng (Director of Shenzhen Scientific Innovation Commission), Guo Yurong (Chairperson of SUSTech University Council), Chen Shiyi (President of SUSTech), Tang Tao (Vice President of SUSTech), and nearly 50 experts and scholars from more than 20 higher education institutions and enterprises at home and abroad attended the opening ceremony. Chen Shiyi, Zhang Jihong, and Niu Zhisheng (a representative of the Forum Organizing Committee and a professor of Tsinghua University) delivered speeches. Prof. Gong Yi of SUSTech Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department presided over the opening ceremony.

At the Forum, Prof. Sherman Shen from University of Waterloo, Canada, made a report on the opportunities and challenges facing vehicular communication networks. Prof. Yu Jingyi from University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, in his report on virtual reality technology, presented his latest laboratory research findings. Prof. Cao Junwei from Tsinghua University, in his report on energy communications and Internet of energy, got attendees to think about how to combine information infrastructure with energy infrastructure. Prof. Liang Yingchang from University of Electronic Science and Technology of China gave a report on wireless big data, which he believes can turn the cognitive radio into an intelligent communication network.

On the morning of October 11, the three-hour academic report session, which drew intense attention from attendees, was followed by four thematic discussions. The expert group headed by Prof. Yang Liuqing of Colorado State University carried out in-depth discussions on the role of wireless network in car networking, the impact of new communication technologies on the Internet, and other topics. The expert group headed by Prof. Niu Zhisheng of Tsinghua University discussed the energy harvesting wireless technology as well as the role and impact of energy harvesting in the future wireless communication network. The expert group headed by Prof. Xu Zhengyuan of University of Science and Technology of China explored the wireless big data and how to combine big data with the wireless communication system design. The expert group headed by Prof. Wu Jun of Tongji University held heated discussions on the rise and development direction of VR (virtual reality) technology and how to achieve wireless transmission through VR equipment.
The attending experts and scholars also included Prof. Xia Xianggen of University of Delaware, USA, Prof. Zhang Wei of University of New South Wales, Australia, Prof. Zhang Qinyu of Harbin Institute of Technology, Prof. Wang Xin of Fudan University, Prof. Ai Bo of Beijing Jiaotong University, Prof. Cheng Xiang of Peking University, Prof. Yang You of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Prof. Hu Fengye of Jilin University, and Prof. Zhang Shengli of Shenzhen University. The professors of SUSTech Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department and several experts from Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. were also present at the Forum.
The Second National Forum on Emerging Wireless Technologies and Open Innovations presented a grand academic feast for attendees and promoted the exchanges and cooperation between experts and scholars.
