During December 2- 4, SUSTech organized the 2016 Scientific and Technological Innovation Experience Camp for Excellent Middle School Students. First time to feel the university atmosphere personally, to communicate with “masters”, to design experiment… various activities kept surprising all campers. During the break, reporter from student news agency came to listen to campers talking about their experiences and feelings.

Quiet campus, Heaven of Academia

Speaking of first impression of SUSTech, students all mentioned “quiet”.

Zou Xinhao from Henan said: “In SUSTech, we enjoy good environment for learning, and the campus is quiet, which helps up calm easily and start learning. Library is nice where many seniors are studying quietly. It’s really a good place.”

Liu Haiqing from Shandong told the reporter: “Shenzhen is beautiful place with blue sky and fresh air, and SUSTech is a comfortable place. I have stayed for only two days here, but I’ve already fallen in love with this place because no matter where you go, teaching buildings, scientific research buildings or walking on the road,  you will feel the right mood for learning.”

New Experience, Vigorous Innovation

One shall never miss the chance for scientific research in SUSTech. During the two-day activity, campers participated in various academic activities, and also conducted experiments personally. These experiences “refreshed” their understanding about scientific research.

“We made a streetlight controller! It’s amazing!” Jin Bo from Shanxi and Han Muyu from Hubei discussed the physics experiment of “using unbalance electric bridge to design streetlight controller” excitedly. “Conducting experiment is very different than what we imagined, all data is required to keep four decimal place. People should be extreme serious when conducting scientific research.”

Zhang Siyu from Shaanxi and Meng Fandongkun from Guizhou felt that, “Experience is the best teacher. SUSTech offers students many chances to practice, which improves their hands-on skills and innovation awareness. It’s wonderful!”

Kang Jingnan and Zeng Yize from Beijing have noticed the eyes of seniors. They recalled: “Teachers give students chance to think more. We can see the light in seniors’ eyes indicating ‘study makes me happy’.”

Face-to-Face with “Masters”, Nice and Considerate

Those campers will never miss the opportunity to communicate with professors in SUSTech.

Chen Qiuning from Zhejiang, Huang Yining from Guangzhou and Jing Wentao from Anhui were very excited speaking of conversion with professors, “Professor Xia Zhihong from Department of Mathematics is such an amazing professor! We talked a lot, and got his autograph. The only thing we missed is a group photo.”

“Teachers in here are all enthusiastic,” said Gao Zhuoya while recalling the memory of conducting experiment. Teachers here patiently explained to those green hands, and taught them hand by hand, which makes students feel very close.

The thing impressed students most is the “conversation” with president Chen Shiyi. The president talked about the insufficient of the university. “From that, we felt the guts the university has, and we think that the insufficient of a university may not only become its shortcoming; this may be a chance for students to build an ideal university together.”

A Fruitful Trip to SUSTech

Whether it is worth to spend this precious time before College Entrance Examination to visit SUSTech?

Kang Jingnan and Zeng Yi answered without any hesitation, “Of course! In here, we experienced a brand new environment, and have new gains. What’s more, by participating in this activity, we have a clearer idea about our target.” They added, “Keeping an eye on SUSTech is because of its new concept, abundant teaching resources, connection with international arena and idea of focusing on liberal education. After having a trip to SUSTech, we become more confident in this university.”

Duan Junan from Shenzhen visited SUSTech with his father, “This camp activity gave me a rather good impression, and it also offered many opportunities. I think SUSTech has many advantages, and it’s an ideal university.”

Duan Junan’s father also had many feelings. “The 2+2 mode applied in here and English-teaching environment offer students a wonderful chance to go to international community one day, and those will save a lot of work and energy. I agree with the president’s idea of elite education.”
