On December 7, 2016, to comprehensively implement the spirit of the opinions of the central, provincial and municipal governments on steadily advancing targeted poverty alleviation, further SUSTech’s counterpart assistance to Chaotian Village, Daba Town, Heping County, Heyuan, Chairperson of University Council Guo Yurong and President Chen Shiyi of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) led a delegation to Heyuan for counterpart assistance. During the visit, they called on Heyuan’s municipal leaders.

On the morning of December 7, the delegation visited teachers and students at Chaotian Primary School in Chaotian Village, talked with them cordially, inquired about school situation, student situation and the existing problems, and presented schoolbags, books and other supplies to students.

The delegation also visited poverty-stricken families and “five-guarantee families”, talked with villagers, inquired their family situation and living conditions, and presented rice, oil and other supplies to “five-guarantee families”.

The delegation also held a meeting with Heyuan’s poverty alleviation staff. Guo recognized the progress of poverty alleviation, expecting to work with the local government to employ respective advantages, adjust measures to local conditions, overcome difficulty, advance poverty alleviation in Chaotian village by stages and steps, and do good and practical things for ordinary people, thus accomplishing the poverty alleviation mission assigned by the superior. At the meeting, local leaders thanked the delegation for its visit, expecting to work with SUSTech on poverty alleviation. Yan Hao, leader of SUSTech’s working team in the village, attended the meeting along with team members Wang Shu and Liu Jia who graduated from SUSTech in 2016.

On the afternoon of December 7, the delegation called on Heyuan’s municipal leaders. They held talks with Zhang Wen, Secretary of the CPC Heyuan Municipal Committee at Heyuan Guest House.

Zhang thanked SUSTech for its great attention to poverty alleviation. SUSTech has developed rapidly and is believed to become a world top university, said him, expecting Chaotian Village to accomplish economic transformation and shake off poverty as soon as possible with the help of SUSTech.

Guo introduced the development of SUSTech, believing that Chaotian Village will get rid of poverty with the concerted efforts of Heyuan and SUSTech.

Chen introduced SUSTech’s faculty and students, as well as its rapid development over the past six years since its founding. He expected to work with Heyuan to advance technology innovation, enroll outstanding students from Heyuan and train them into outstanding talents needed by the country.
