To further the fire awareness of both teachers and students and enhance the school’s organization and problem-solving capability in times of emergencies, on the afternoon of December 15, 2016, SUSTech held “Fire Evacuation Drill 2016” in the 1st and 2nd Scientific Research Building. President Chen Shiyi served as commander of the fire evacuation drill and over 500 teachers and students participated in the drill.

The Fire Drill simulated a fire outbreak in a research laboratory on the fifth floor of 2nd Scientific Research Building and a fire alarm was started shortly after. Vice President Qin Zheng read the fire drill procedures to all teams prior to it and President Chen Shiyi announced to “start the drill” on the completion of drill preparation reported by Security Office Director Liu Lianfu.
On monitoring the fire hazard, SUSTech Fire Control Office reported to the fire department and leadership at the higher level, promptly developed fire emergency plan, broadcasted fire emergency evacuation notice, when all staff and students evacuated under the guidance of the Evacuation Team. The Fire Fighting Team and the Medical Treatment Team rushed to the scene on receiving the notice to put out the fire and treat the wounded.
All staff and students were evacuated to the parking lot of the Student Restaurant where members of the Commanding Team elaborated types of fire, how to distinguish and use fire extinguishers, precautions to fight against primary fire, how to use gas masks and other knowledge on fire fighting. Each department sent representatives to participate in the actual excise with fire extinguishers.
After the evacuation drill, SUSTech Emergency Rescue Team taught and demonstrated emergency rescue cardiopulmonary resuscitation on site, and the Fire Fighting Team showed how to use high-pressure water guns, quick laying of four water belts by two persons, and analyzed types of fire clothing and how to wear it. SUSTech property company showed the use of its miniature fire engines.
