On the eve of the sixth anniversary of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), to offer the media and all walks of life further knowledge of SUSTech’s achievements in educational reform, SUSTech organized an event welcoming journalists in Shenzhen to SUSTech on December 13, 2016 in the lead up to the upcoming anniversary celebration. Yi Yunwen, President of the Association of Journalists in Shenzhen, led the heads of the journalist associations and journalists of 14 central media outlets in Shenzhen to SUSTech. Guo Yurong, Chairperson of SUSTech, met the delegation led by Yi. Chen Shiyi, President of SUSTech, held a meeting with the journalists, introducing the history of SUSTech. Li Fengliang, Vice Chairperson of SUSTech, presided over the meeting.

SUSTech is an “experimental field” for China’s higher education reform, said Chen. SUSTech’s development over the past six years has been inseparable from the care and concern of the whole nation and the strong support from the media. In recent years, SUSTech has developed rapidly, got concern and support from the Ministry of Education, the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee, the People’s Government of Guangdong Province, the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee and the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government. A great city needs to be supported by a great university, we will stick to a socialist road of university running with Chinese characteristics, shoulder the mission assigned by Shenzhen, aim high and take root in China, in a bid to build SUSTech into a world top research university. Hopefully the media will pay more attention to SUSTech and its progress, and offer valuable advice on its construction and development.

Li introduced SUSTech’s strategic plan of “building a world top research university in China” and working progress in 2016 from SUSTech’s mission and goal, top-notch science & engineering university construction, disciplinary development, faculty, talent training, research, global engagement and campus construction.

Shenzhen is a window working a miracle of reform, SUSTech is a highly positioned city of reform and innovation, and the media have been paying close attention to every change of SUSTech, said Yi. It is a rare opportunity to communicate with SUSTech at close range to enhance mutual understanding. Hopefully the two sides will establish good exchange relations to promote the development of SUSTech.

At the meeting, the journalists asked about why SUSTech can attract so many high-end talents and outstanding students from across the country, SUSTech’s training mode and other issues. Fellow Liu Ke of SUSTech, as well as the heads of departments such as the Office of Public Relations, the Office of Education Affairs and the Office of Student Affairs gave replies.

Following the meeting, the journalists visited SUSTech’s sand table, test centers, laboratories and colleges.
