Initiated by SUSTech President Chen Shiyi and held during the Spring Festival every year, the symposium was held at SUSTech for the third time this year. Yang Wei, President of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC); Meng Qingguo, Executive Deputy Director of the Department of Mathematical & Physical Sciences, NSFC; Zhan Shige, Chief of the Division of Mechanics Sciences, Department of Mathematical & Physical Sciences, NSFC and Deng Xiaogang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences attended the symposium as special guests.

Chen Shiyi delivers an address

At the opening ceremony, Chen extended his warm welcome to the attendees on behalf of SUSTech. He introduced SUSTech’s development and phased achievements over the past years. As an annual event with a history of over 10 years, the New Year Fluid Mechanics Symposium has created a top-notch academic exchange platform for domestic fluid mechanics experts and scholars, he said, expecting the experts and scholars present to support the construction of SUSTech. He also sent New Year wishes to the attendees.

In his address, Yang fully recognized the high level of the symposium and offered advice on the further development of fluid mechanics. He spoke highly of SUSTech’s development in recent years, and expected for the further development of mechanics and other disciplines in SUSTech.

Meng said that the symposium is the best mechanics platform integrating young and middle-aged experts. He made suggestions on the development layout of domestic fluid mechanics development from the perspective of the NSFC Development Plan and National Major Research Program.

Apart from the basic issues of fluid mechanics, the attendees also exchanged ideas on key issues of fluid mechanics in fields such as gas dynamics, and ocean and numerical simulation. Among the attendees were academic leaders and key figures from universities and research institutes such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Zhejiang University, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai University, National University of Defense Technology, Harbin Institute of Technology, Dalian University of Technology, Ocean University of China, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center, and SUSTech.
