Li Fengliang delivered his sincere welcome and gratitude to all the principals for their presence in the discussion on education reform and cooperation. The significant achievements made by SUSTech in talent development, professor introduction, scientific research results and admission reform in a short term, he said, should be attributed to the concentration and support of numerous principals of high schools. He expected further cooperation in talent selection and development, teacher-student communication and joint researches and longed for more proposals at the seminar before its conclusion.

Chen Shiyi giving a lecture

At the lecture themed “Ideas, Strategies and Practices of SUSTech in Education Reform”, Chen said that Shenzhen is the most vigorous city in China with remarkable achievements in advanced technology, logistics, financial services, culture, and so on. In his words, a great city needs a great university! SUSTech should undertake the mission for the development of Shenzhen to become a magnificent city in the next one to two decades, and the mission for the higher education reform in China to serve the society and focus on developing the ambitious scientists and entrepreneurs in line with the needs of China and Shenzhen.

He also said: “We will seek the inspiration of technological innovation from frontier and interdisciplinary science and give the superiority to the culture of innovation in universities with focus on new and emerging subjects, so as to build an international university with the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship. Meanwhile, we will set up a long-term, stable and all-round cooperation platform in talent development, education and scientific research for universities and high schools.” His lecture struck a chord among the principals and earned rounds of applause.

Huang Kefu introducing the talent development mode of SUSTech

Huang Kefu highlights the new education mode focused on “credit system, college system and tutor system” and “globalization, individualization and elitism”. The director of the Office of Admission briefed the audience on admissions and policies over the past few years and gave a comprehensive evaluation on the admission development and efficiency as well as the optimized plans for the admission.

Wang Dianjun analyzing the overall quality evaluation system

Wang Dianjun, Principal of Tsinghua University High School, spoke highly of SUSTech’s education mode, teachers’ excellence and admission system innovation, acclaiming SUSTech as an underestimated high-level university with a promising future. He said that the overall quality evaluation is a major reference for students in graduation and further education as it mainly reflects the all-round development of morality, intelligence and aesthetic. In addition, he detailed the overall quality evaluation system of Tsinghua University High School. The system, as a creative trial, provides a guideline for the education for all-round development and a reference for high schools and universities in talent evaluation and selection.

Different ideas and thoughts

Amid the intense discussions, all the principals of high schools present delivered their ideas and thoughts on collaboration between basic and higher education and SUSTech’s reform and innovation.

They said SUSTech has become an innovative university with distinct features and reached a high level thanks to its high positioning, new system and bravery, and is becoming a leader in terms of faculties quality, international and elite education, admission mode, and many other aspects. Meanwhile, they also suggested SUSTech further improve the publicity policies and practices for a better growth.

Concerning the “6-3-1” overall evaluation & admission mode, they suggested focusing on the qualities unrelated to knowledge and skills like desires, attitudes, morality and responsibilities with better execution of “3” and “1”.

In addition, they recommended the establishment of a joint development platform, the launch of experimental camps and teacher lectures, guidance to academic competitions in high schools and a connection in university courses and development mode to promote the collaborative development and cooperation between SUSTech and high schools, thereby achieving the goal of joint development of outstanding innovative talents.

During the seminar, the principals present visited SUSTech’s campus and laboratories.
