On April 8th 2017, SUSTech welcomed over 2000 students and parents from all over China to visit the university campus and facilities. SUSTech party secretary Guo Yurong, President Chen Shiyi and vice president Wu Chuanyue were present throughout the main activities of the day.
Activity forum
The Open Day started at 8:30 am, with lots of diverse and colourful presentation stands, filling the campus with a cheerful buzz. The various faculties and departments set up the inquiry stands throughout the campus grounds where professors could answer the visitors’ questions and discuss their future.
SUSTech Introduction Seminar
At 9:00 am, the “Innovative Talent Training Seminar” was held in the lecture hall in the First Scientific Building. The audience completely filled up all the seats to hear Guo Yurong and the other speakers, and among the audience was Wu Chuanyue and SUSTech vice governor Huang Kefu, who was in charge of overseeing the seminar.
Guo Yurong’s speech
Guo Yurong delivered a speech in which she expressed her warmest welcome to the audience on behalf of SUSTech. She said that the university attaches great importance to the Open Days, whose purpose is to give the visitors a clear picture of what is SUSTech and what they can expect from studying here. She pointed out that the university is on an important historical mission, reforming the general structure of Chinese higher education and building a world-class research university. She said the SUSTech team were eager to welcome top students to join the university and fulfill their personal hopes and scientific and technological ambitions.
President Chen’s speech
President Chen – who rushed back to SUSTech after attending other affairs – was second to arrive on stage and was greeted with warm applause. He said that the future of SUSTech was intertwined with the future of each of it’s students, and he assured the future students’ parents that SUSTech will give them the very best training and facilities for them to build their future.
Wu Chuanyue’s speech
Wu Chuanyue’s report entitled “Cultivating Top Innovative Talents Centered on Students”, introduced the situation and the latest developments of the university from the perspective of discipline construction, research level, talent team, international education, undergraduate enrolment and student training methods.
Hou Shengtao’s introduction
Minister of International Cooperation of China Prof. Hou Shengtao was also present and gave a lecture on “International Cooperation and International Education” in which he introduced the main characteristics of international education and the importance of it’s key components such as international cooperation, scientific projects and funding.
Guo Xiaosheng followed by sharing experiences from the graduates on studying and living in SUSTech. He particularly noted their appreciation for the close relationships SUSTech has with professional partners, the thorough support from their tutors, the high-tech facilities and the faculty members regular publications in top scientific journals. He expressed his gratitude and affection for SUSTech, and hopes that more students can join it’s programs.
One student’s father spoke about his impressions of SUSTech and how it has evolved over the years as his son was studying. He particularly underlined SUSTech’s growing attraction for students, his son’s strong professional sense and international vision, key aspects in his son’s development which made him very happy with his choice of university.
Guangdong enrolment group leader Tang Bin introduced SUSTech’s admissions and enrolment policies and the registration process.
After the end of the seminar, many parents and students stayed in order to ask questions and discuss with the university representatives, and the seminar was followed by presentations from 14 of SUSTech’s science and technology departments.
Laboratory visit
At noon, many students and parents stayed on campus, they were invited to lunch in the University’s dining hall which they showered in praise. For those who still wanted to know more about SUSTech, an accompanied visit of the laboratory facilities was organised in the afternoon.
