Over the weekend, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) welcomed a delegation from the Department of Science and Technology in the Ministry of Education (MoE). The MoE delegation was led by Department of Science and Technology Director Lei Chaozi, High-tech Department Director Li Yuhong and Department of General Affairs Director Zou Hui. They were met by SUSTech University Council Vice Chairperson Li Fengliang, Office of Research Director Zhao Yusheng, Vice Provost (Global Strategies) Zheng Chunmiao and Shenzhen Institute of Quantum Science & Engineering Dean Yu Dapeng.
As part of the discussions, both sides were joined by senior leaders from across SUSTech, in a meeting that was hosted by Office of Research Director Zhao Yusheng. Director Zhao Yusheng thanked the MoE for their continued support for SUSTech, and provided them with a briefing about the current situation on campus. He also spoke of the importance SUSTech places on its scientific research, and its success in attracting funding for its projects.
Zhao Yusheng reiterated SUSTech’s commitment to the State Council Statement on Shenzhen, saying that SUSTech would continue to be an active participant in the development of China and the Greater Bay Area through the strengthening of its major scientific research platforms.
Department of Science and Technology Director Lei Chaozi emphasized the importance of scientific research at universities, and fully affirmed the research outcomes at SUSTech in its short history. He hoped that SUSTech would stick to its innovative mission of reform in higher education in China, and take a leading role in the development of Shenzhen.
In the new era, scientific and technological developments at institutions of higher education play a vital role in the development of nations. Basic research must seek to solve scientific problems that can benefit society. Lei Chaozi added that SUSTech should find their position in the global university market as part of their wider innovative plans. Simultaneously, SUSTech must remain cognizant of the major strategic needs of the region and the nation in order to make greater contributions to society.
In separate speeches, Li Yuhong and Zou Hui talked about the impressive achievements and rapid development of SUSTech. They recommended that SUSTech take full advantage of the opportunities and resources available to them in driving their strategic direction for superior disciplines and developing unique research directions, thus serving the development of nationally strategic industries.
Prior to the meeting, the MoE delegation visited the 3D campus construction sand table, where SUSTech University Council Vice Chairperson gave a briefing on the plans for SUSTech. Li Fengliang pointed out that SUSTech’s development is inseparable from the support of the MoE, and will continue to explore and innovate its systems, with the broad goal of building a world-class research university, rooted in China.
The delegation also visited the quantum chip processing center, Cryo-electron Microscopy Center and Core Research Facilities.
