SUSTech hosts “Belt and Road International Music Seminar”

On the evening of May 13th 2017, the Art Center of SUSTech hosted the “Belt and Road International Music Seminar” at the Shenzhen Grand Theater. With Mariana Nicolesco as special guest, the renown Romanian soprano singer and a number of outstanding young Chinese singers, the evening turned out to be a spectacular musical experience for the people of Shenzhen. The seminar aims to establish deeper cultural cooperation and awareness.

Worldwide Artists Meet SUSTech for Artistic Performance

On May 9th, the “Belt and Road International Music Seminar” kicked off in the SUSTech library lecture hall. The University Council Chairperson Guo Yurong and the Romanian soprano singer Mariana Nicolesco, the famous art historian and French Legion of Honour medalist Radu Varia, Shenzhen Musicians Association Chairman Yao Feng, General Manager of Shenzhen Grand Theater Zheng Wenxia and music artists from all over the world attended the opening ceremony, which was presided over by the Director of the Art Center of SUSTech.

Chairman of the Chinese Musicians Association and famous composer Ye Xiaocheng sent a congratulatory speech to the audience, impressed to see gathered so many international vocal artists, educators, and a high standard international music seminar in a science and engineering university, which led him to congratulate the organisers warmly.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Chairperson of SUSTech said that the university attaches great importance to the students’ cultural education and knowledge, and that this event is of great significance, so that science and art circles can reach out to each other and understand each other better.

Vocal master class

Face to face with the master

A series of activities on the topic of “how to perfect the interpretation of international opera”, saw here at SUSTech a variety of art forums, vocal master classes, art history lectures, and a large public performance just to name a few. Celebrities especially invited from China’s cultural industry, vocal music educators, soprano singer Guo Shuzhen, as well as more than 30 well-known artists from around the world gathered for the event. At the seminar, musicians from Australia, Japan, Russia and other countries expressed their views and shared ideas, which was very interesting for the audience. Nicolesco’s master class attracted all types of music amateurs from SUSTech, while nearly 90 years old Guo Shuzhen shared in his lecture his years of valuable music education and stage performance experience for the younger generation musicians.

Arts and cultural exchanges between China and Romania

It is worth mentioning that the famous international vocal competition jury chairman Mariana Nicolesco brought along with her the Romanian Ministry of Culture and the International Vocal Competition Fund will set up a Special Scholarship for 2017 Special Chinese Young Singers. The scholarship will invite 30 high potential Chinese young singers to visit the European Arts and Culture Center in Brussels, and also spend time in Romania this summer to participate in the International Vocal Competition, which will celebrate its 20th edition.

Adrian Lupeanu, Minister of Culture and Education of the Romanian Embassy in China, hailed SUSTech as a first-class science and technology university and was delighted to participate in this event which showed the importance of cultural and artistic education, as well as building on the foundation of the Sino-Romanian relationship to make a positive contribution to the exchange of arts and culture. He said that he hoped the Arts Center will continue to organise such events in the future, to further enhance the friendship between the two countries.

SUSTech to build first-class art education platform

SUSTech attaches great importance to humanities and arts education, and in 2015, the School Art Center was established to set up an international art education platform for professors and students to show the outstanding artistic accomplishment of the students. The center gathered a group of outstanding artistic talent, and actively carry out events and activities.

The art center not only offers a top class art courses, but also regularly invites artists from around the world to organize academic lectures, art exhibitions, workshops and master classes, so that students have the opportunity to open themselves to a new artistic vision.

According to Bi Baoyi, the Art Center has created a first-class university art troupe – Southern University of Science and Technology Troupe, which includes symphony orchestras, folk orchestras, college choirs, dance troupes, theatre groups, faculty choirs and individual specialist groups. She said that the Center will use professional art education to enable students to progress in their artistic qualities and awareness, and to contribute to the aesthetic vision of the university.
