The 2017 National College English Contest (NECCS) finals – China’s largest and most comprehensive English language contest – were held on May 14th. The contest took place in Guangzhou University of Finance and Economics’ campus, with approximately 40 colleges and universities and a total of 275 students participating. SUSTech graduate Qiu Chengjie achieved 124.5 points (out of 150 points), an outstanding result and was awarded the C class award, ranking second out of 197.

The National College English Contest is the only national college students’ English language competition jointly sponsored by the Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education and the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Association of the University. The preliminary round was held on April 9 in 31 provinces and autonomous regions, with a total of 1300 colleges and universities and nearly 1.2 million college students participating. The competition is divided into four categories: A (graduate), B (English majors), C (non-English majors), D (art students and high vocational students), and offers four national awards: Grand Prize, first prize, Second prize and third prize. Second prize and third prize are awarded after the preliminary rounds, Grand Prize and first prize are given after the finals. This year is the first time that a SUSTech candidate participates, with strong support from the university’s Language Center. English teacher Lisa Liu worked as a guide teacher, organizing the preliminary selection work, and by providing students with high-quality small group classes with interactive teaching, the students regularly achieve excellent results, reflecting the quality of the teaching.
