Over the weekend, the Department of Biology at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) held a Laboratory Open Day, aiming to help the Class of 2023 gain a better understanding of the research resources available to them within the Department and stimulate their interest in practical study while helping them find a potential future academic pursuit.

Students visited facilities like the Institute of Plant and Food Sciences, the Laboratory Animal Research Center, the Cryo-Electron Microscopy Center and various research laboratories.

Chair Professor and Department Head Chen Wei showed the students wonderful blueprint of histology for the students. He went from the exploration, cure and prevention of diseases to the prediction of drug efficacy, in order to explain the infinite value and application of histology research. Finally, he told students, “As a scientist, never lose your curiosity to pursue truth and explore the unknown.”

Many students expressed interest in studying neurobiology and thus wanted to know what happens every day in that laboratory. Deputy Department Head Professor Hou Shengtao introduced his research work with great humor and encouraged students to talk to faculty members, in order to better understand a potential direction in the biological sciences.

At the Institute of Plant and Food Sciences, engineer Wen Xing talked about basic scientific research. “This is a boring yet noble thing. We encourage you to make a choice after you understand this correctly.”

Engineers at the Cryo-Electron Microscopy Center explained the principles of electron microscope imaging in detail and the purpose of cryo-electron microscopy. They took many questions from the excited students
