Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) recently hosted the 22^nd International Symposium on Advances in Abrasive Technology (ISAAT2019) and the 20^th Chinese Conference of Abrasive Technology (CCAT2019). The Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering (MEE) at SUSTech helped organize ISAAT2019 in conjunction with the International Committee for Abrasive Technology (ICAT) and the Chinese Committee for Abrasive Technology (CCAT).

December 5 saw CCAT2019 take place on campus, organized by MEE, the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society (CMES), and the Joint Engineering Research Center of Intelligent Manufacturing Technology for Brittle Materials at Huaqiao University. More than 260 experts and scholars from across China flocked to SUSTech to attend CCAT2019.

CCAT2019 had several reports on advanced manufacturing technologies within the Greater Bay Area. MEE Chair Professor Wu Yongbo chaired CCAT2019 with Huaqiao University President Xu Xipeng.

SUSTech University Council Vice Chairperson Li Fengliang spoke at the opening ceremony, pointing out that SUSTech is working hard to develop its mechanical engineering discipline. SUSTech is striving to build a world-class research university rooted in China. He hoped that the participating experts would provide suggestions for the development of its mechanical engineering discipline.

Huaqiao University President Xu Xipeng hoped that the experts would speak freely in expressing their insights into abrasive particle technology.

Top scholars from across the Greater Bay Area and around mainland China gave several reports on topics such as ultra-precision abrasive particle processing, manufacturing technology, manufacturing principles, and applications.

Following CCAT2019, ISAAT2019 followed from December 6 to 9. More than 300 experts, scholars, and technicians from around the world attended the meeting. ISAAT2019 was sponsored by the Japan Society of Abrasive Technology (JSAT) and Huaqiao University. Huaqiao University President Xu Xipeng served as the ISAAT2019 chairman while the ISAAT2019 opening ceremony was chaired by MEE Assistant Professor Zhao Yonghua.

As part of the opening ceremony, College of Engineering Dean Xu Zhenghe anticipated that there would be more new ideas on advanced abrasive particle technology.

Huaqiao University President Xu Xipeng spoke about recent developments in abrasive grain technology, hoping that ISAAT2019 would promote further progress in the field.

Some of the special guests in attendance included the University of Huddersfield Professor David Walker, Okayama University Professor Kazuhito Ohashi, Sumitomo Electric Industries Chief Engineer Hitoshi Sumiya and National Taiwan University Professor Liao Hsien-Shun. Their keynote speeches inspired significant discussion on a wide range of topics.
