On December 19, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) took a different direction for its 253rd SUSTech Lecture Series. Guangdong Writers Association Chairman Jiang Shuzhuo (former Jinan University Party Secretary), Hunan University School of Design Dean He Renke and Zhejiang University College of Media & International Culture Professor Hu Zhiyi (Chinese Society of Drama Theory and History Association President) all took part in a panel discussion on “Cultural Innovation for Emerging and Innovative Universities and the Environment for Education.”

SUSTech University Council Vice Chairperson Li Fengliang, Communications & Public Relations Director Zhang Ling and Student Affairs Director Xue Zheng all attended the discussion that was chaired by the School of Humanities and the Social Sciences Dean Chen Yuehong.

Guangdong Writers Association Chairman Jiang Shuzhuo said that universities are vital in developing culture and have a profound impact on human development. As a result, SUSTech has a crucial role to play in developing creative and critical thinkers for society, and he hoped that SUSTech students would take part in more literary and artistic pursuits.

Hunan University School of Art & Design Dean He Renke examined the artistic potential of STEM students by looking back at their role in history. He said that campus culture is essential in a globalized digital era, and he is looking forward to working with the SUSTech community in the development of its campus culture.

Zhejiang University School of Media & International Culture Professor Hu Zhiyi added that SUSTech has a positive environment for the liberal arts, and he hoped that students would continue to engage in these activities to get a better understanding of the world around them.

The three experts took many questions from the audience following their presentations.

SUSTech University Council Vice Chairperson Li Fengliang closed the panel discussion, saying that SUSTech aims to develop a better campus culture through the enhancement of art throughout campus. The establishment of the Expert Art and Culture Committee will further promote cultural and artistic infrastructure at SUSTech. He hoped that students would continue to play a leading role in the organic development of campus culture in the future.
