On December 10, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Shuhong Yu came to Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) to give the 247th lecture in the SUSTech Lecture Series. His address was on “The Design, Synthesis and Future of Bionic Materials.” Haiping Xia, Chair Professor of the Department of Chemistry; the Executive Dean of Grubbs Institute, presided over the lecture.
Professor Yu Shuhong works within the Department of Chemistry at the University of Science and Technology China (USTC). He was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2019. Professor Yu Shuhong is the director of the Division of Nanomaterials and Chemistry of the Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at the Microscale.
In his lecture, Professor Shuhong Yu introduced the multi-level structure of strange biominerals and biomaterials in nature. He pointed out that biominerals are well-known composites of inorganic and organic materials in the form of fascinating shapes and high ordered structures, which exist in nature such as shells, pearl, and Boston ivy. These biominerals are all in his research objects.
Shuhong Yu presented his recent advances on the bio-inspired synthesis of a family of inorganic or inorganic-organic micro-/nano- structural materials and their macroscopic scale assemblies, such as synthetic nacre, a new type of heat insulation and fireproof material.
He also explained his research results to teachers and students. He systematically studied the effect of the biomimetic molecular template on the crystallization, growth, morphology & structure of inorganic micro nanomaterials and realized a series of cross-scale controllable biomimetic synthesis, assembly preparation, and functionalization of biomimetic materials. Yu Shuhong said that these macroscopic nanoparticle assemblies are showing enormous application potentials in diverse fields.
After the lecture, teachers and students actively asked questions, and Shuhong Yu patiently answered them one by one.
