On January 11 and 12, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) was the host of the 3rd International Workshop on Seawater Sea-Sand Concrete (SSC) Structures Reinforced with FRP Composites (SSC Workshop). Over 200 students and scholars from across China and around the world came to attend the SSC Workshop over the two days.

CAS Academician and Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) President Teng Jinguang chaired the organizing committee, with the Department of Ocean Science and Engineering (OSE) Chair Professor Chen Jianfei & PolyU Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Professor Yu Tao working together as vice-chairs. The SSC Workshop was co-sponsored by the PolyU Research Institute for Sustainable Urban Development, PolyU CEE, and OSE at SUSTech.

PolyU President Teng Jinguang spoke about the purpose of the SSC Workshop and hoped that the scholars would promote FRP composite material research. Academic reports were given by scholars from China, India, the United States, Japan, Poland, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Australia on January 11.

On January 12, experts and scholars discussed the recently announced project by the Hong Kong Research Grant’s Council, “new sustainable marine engineering structure based on sea sand concrete and fiber-reinforced composite materials.”
