SUSTech Co-sponsored Opening of 2017 “Shenzhen Cup” Mathematical Modeling Challenge
| 08/16/2017

The 2017 “Shenzhen Cup” Mathematical Modeling Challenge organized by the National Association of Mathematical Modeling, the Shenzhen Science and Technology Association and SUSTech was held in the Shenzhen Municipal School on August 13th 2017. More than 220 teachers and students were at the event, not only from SUSTech itself but also from Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, Macao University of Science and Technology and other well-known colleges and universities. The challenges consisted of mathematical modeling methods, networking, video modeling, ATM transaction, analysis and anomaly detection, analysis of Shenzhen city life garbage disposal’s total cost, Shenzhen vegetables security risk assessment and 4 propositions for a sampling plan design.

More than 300 people attended the opening ceremony including the Zhejiang University professor Chen Shuping, the Vice President of the Shenzhen Association of Science Zhang Li and the Vice-Dean of Research and Teaching of SUSTech Huang Kefu.

Huang stated on his speech that this year is the third consecutive year where SUSTech held the “Shenzhen Cup”, contributing significantly to the field of mathematical modeling to solve current issues in this field.

The participants spent a whole week visiting various districts of the city, observing the garbage transfer station and incineration plant systems in order to deliver a proposition for a landfill that will cover the needs of Shenzhen and other similar developing cities. Wang Jiuzhou said that before, internet data was sufficient to build a modeling project, but now it is becoming clear that not only a physical presence is needed but also mathematical knowledge in order to solve practical problems.

After the opening ceremony, director of technology management of Huawei Technologies Co. Luo Long and MathWorks China Senior Engineer Guo Wenyan explained how mathematical connections are so important to the research progress in the industrial, robotic and AI. fields.

The mathematical brainstorming serves not only to attract gifted people to deepen their understanding of Shenzhen but also to push even further with wider suggestions for it, a way to improve the economic and social quality of life in the city.

It is well known that before the opening of SUSTech in 2011, the “Shenzhen Cup” had already been held for 7 years with the “Intelligence University” title, attracting nearly two thousand teachers and students by reusing mathematical modeling methods to solve practical problems.
