With the recent National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) announcement about 2020 project funding, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) has received funding for 182 projects with a total funding amount of over 93 million RMB.

Among the 182 projects, 70 General Program projects, 90 Young Scientists Fund projects, five Key Program projects, two projects of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, four projects of Excellent Young Scientists Fund, two Major Research Plan projects, six projects of Research Fund for International Young Scientists, one project of the International (Regional) Cooperation and Exchange Program, and two projects under the Special Fund received financial support from the NSFC at SUSTech.

This year, with a 7.1% decrease in the NSFC funding budget and a 12% increase in the number of applications. SUSTech keeps a high funding rate of the General Program and the Young Scientists Fund of around 30%.

Affected by the COVID-19 situation this year, the NSFC fund committee has made many adjustments to its work process during the application and evaluation stages.

The SUSTech community responded to the challenge. The applicants gained support and assistance from the Office of Research, including the presentation recording and online defense preparation services. This year, the five Key Program projects all passed the NSFC’s board evaluation.

The total number of approved talent projects has increased significantly this year. Dr. Xinyuan LIU (Department of Chemistry) and Dr. Zheng ZHANG (Second Affiliated Hospital of SUSTech) were selected for the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.

Dr. Lei XI (Department of Biomedical Engineering), Dr. Yanggang WANG (Department of Chemistry), Dr. Hengxin REN (Department of Earth and Space Sciences), and Dr. Huiling CAO (School of Medicine) were all approved for funding by the Young Scientists Fund.

There has been a steady growth in the number of approved major projects. This year, Dr. Dongfeng GU (School of Medicine), Dr. Qiman SHAO (Department of Statistics and Data Science), Dr. Bin CHEN, and Dr. Jianfeng ZHANG  (Department of Earth and Space Sciences), and the other recipients have received funding from Key Program.
