On September 25th, 2020, Dr. Liyuan ZHANG, a Professor from the Department of Physics at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), became one of the 50 winners of XPLORER PRIZE for his contribution in Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies.
In 2019, Dr. Xingyu JIANG (Chair Professor from Department of Biomedical Engineering) and Dr. Weishu LIU (Associate Professor from Materials Science and Engineering) also received the XPLORER PRIZE in Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies and Energy and Environmental Protection.
The “XPLORER PRIZE” is a non-governmental and public interest prize for young scientists and technicians aged 45 and under that working full-time in mainland China, Hong Kong, or Macao.
This no-string-attached prize is intended for talented young scientists and technicians in fundamental sciences and researches to recognize their potential in forefront scientific explorations. The “XPLORER PRIZE” is initiated by Huateng MA (Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Tencent and founder of the Tencent Foundation) and Professor Yi RAO in cooperation with 14 well-known scientists such as Chen Ning YANG and Shude MAO.
Before joining SUSTech in 2014, Dr. Liyuan ZHANG received his Ph.D. in physics from Georgia Institute of Technology in 2007. He then worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Purdue University, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
His major research interests are in experimental quantum transport in condensed matter physics. He has published more than 30 papers in high-impact journals such as Nature, Nature Physics, Physical Review Letters, Advanced Materials, and Nano Letters.
His work led to many breakthroughs. In 2019, the Ministry of Science and Technology of China(MOST) recognized SUSTech’s experimental proof of the 3D Quantum Hall for the first time as one of China’s Top Ten Scientific Advances in 2019, and the Department of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) also selected it as one of the Outstanding Achievements in 2019.
