On the morning of Oct 1, 2020, the University held a flag-raising ceremony to mark the 71st anniversary of the Founding of The People’s Republic of China.
University Council Vice Chairperson Fengliang LI, Secretary-General Siqi CHEN, and Council Member Ling ZHANG led faculty members and student representatives to attend the ceremony. Director of Student Affairs Office Xue ZHENG presided over the flag-raising ceremony.
At 8 am, the faculty members and students were assembled neatly below the flagpoles on Green Pine Stadium. In everyone’s eyes, the bright red flag was escorted slowly by the student National Flag guards. To the solemn sounds of the national anthem, the flag slowly rose, and everyone sang the national anthem.
Subsequently, the representatives for the residential colleges recited the patriotic poem. The poem tells the story of Shenzhen’s reform and opening up and the prosperity and strength of the motherland. It demonstrates the spirit of SUSTechers to face the challenge and opportunities in the new era.
Following the raising of the flag, Vice-Chairperson Fengliang LI spoke at the ceremony. He said that this year marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. He said that a first-class city needs a first-class university, and a first-class city calls for a first-class university. SUSTech will continue to explore science and technology and to create new models for higher education.
“Facing the new situation, we must realize that innovation is the first driving force for a nation’s development,” said Vice-Chairperson LI.
He encouraged the SUSTech students to shoulder the mission and strive to achieve breakthroughs in science and technology for the country’s prosperity.
The flag-raising ceremony ended successfully with the singing of ” Ode to the Motherland” by all participants. The ceremony is one of the events of SUSTech’s activities for the 71st anniversary of the Founding of The People’s Republic of China.
