On December 1, a team led by SUSTech School of Microelectronics Professor Hao YU won the second prize of the 10th WU Wen Jun AI Special Award (chip design). Members of the team include SUSTech Associate Professor Fengwei AN, Assistant Professor Quan CHEN, Research Assistant Professor Wei MAO, Chief Engineer of Tencent Xiaoyu YU, and CEO of DDPAI Yong LUO.

With the development of big data, the Internet of Things, and other technologies, artificial intelligence (AI) technology represented by the deep neural network is widely used in image processing and other fields. The amount of computing on the AI terminals is increasing, while the computing performance of edge devices based on traditional architecture is limited by hardware resources. There is an urgent need for the application of deep neural networks in a high-throughput and low-power way.

The edge computing AI chip technology presented by the AI chip design team of SUSTech School of Microelectronics aims to design the upgraded edge computing AI chip featuring high performance, low power consumption, and low cost for the applications of the Internet of things. The energy consumption can reach mW level, which is only one thousand of the traditional GPU chip, its flux can reach the GPU (TFLOPS) level, and the cost is also as low as 1%. By using this technology, AI with deep learning function can be realized on the miniaturized embedded terminal equipment. The technology is in line with the current national strategic needs of China and is also the core technology for the upgrading of high-tech enterprises.

WU Wen Jun AI Science and Technology Award is named after Wu Wenjun, pioneer of China’s intelligent science research and the winner of the first Highest Science and Technology Awards. The award was organized by the Chinese Academy of Artificial Intelligence (CAAI).. The award is known as “the highest award for intelligent science and technology in China”, representing the highest honor symbol in the field of artificial intelligence. Scientists and managers who have made significant breakthroughs in the field of intelligent science and technology and who have made outstanding contributions to the field will be granted the prize.
