Welcoming freshmen in SUSTC is like celebrating a grand festival. 

On August 30th and 31st, 2015, our university welcomed a batch of vigorous new students of 2015. Over 900 excellent students came to SUSTC from 21 provinces and cities in China, and brought a touch of more beautiful color for scenic SUSTC campus.

In such a time when freshmen goes through the registration procedures, it is just like that SUSTC has ushered in a grand festival. Colored flags were put up on both sides of the road from school gate to students’ dormitories, scrolls are hanging on both sides of the welcome bridge, and inspirational slogans are posted on the walls of teaching buildings and dormitories……

As the first college established in SUSTC, Zhiren College acted as a “welcoming home court” in this welcoming activity, responsible for the main registration. We learnt from Bao Chuanwen, dean of the college, that the preparations for the welcoming of freshmen have begun at the end of last semester. Form the allocation of main work to the conception of small details, each teacher in the college has been busy like an arduous bee, to create a warm atmosphere of “home” for the new students diligently. A “Big Tree” full of creativity was put on the most prominent place in front of the Zhiren office, “Each green leaf of the tree is a fingerprint pressed by each new student, and in the side of which is the name of the student signed by themselves. When they see this picture after they become success several years later, they will recall their lives in SUSTC and find the footprint of their growing.”

The new established Zhicheng College and Shude College this semester have elaborately prepared for the coming of new students of 2015. In the new decorated activity rooms of new colleges, freshmen and their parents can lean against windows to enjoy the green waves on the lake surface, or sit in sofa to read orientation books, or have a cordial conversation around bright tall wooden table. In the design process of the layout of new colleges, main color combination, furniture style, convenient and complete facilities were taken into consideration , which helps to reflect the new features of Shude College and Zhicheng College.

Walking out of the college, we saw a security guard taking bags for a freshman who just arrived at. He said, “I help you take these bags!” and at the same time, he took over the reticules and books from the freshmen. It is introduced by the director of the property management company that they sent more than 20 people to support the site during the welcoming of freshmen of this year. Security personnel were arranged in each police box on the campus, responsible for the maintenance of cars, the decoration of the meeting place and the cleaning of each building and main road……the staff of the property management company appeared in each corner of SUSTC. Only a few minutes, the security guard who had taken bags for new students came back to his duty point and his forehead was covered with sweat . When he was asked “Ddi you feel tired in the past two days?” He just smiled and said, “Not at all. I am very glad to see so many new students coming to our university!”

During the welcome of new students, many sophomores and junior students from 2013 and 2014 came back to school early to be volunteers. In the two days of 30th and 31st, SUSTC student volunteers holding red welcome boards appeared in each railway stations of Shenzhen and Bao’an International Airport; on the campus, students of the Student Union put up sunshades thoughtfully in front of the library and between the colleges, providing freshmen and their parents with spring water and raincoats for free, and heartily directing ways for students; on the open space among colleges, seniors “setting a stand” arranged meaningful activities of “taking a photo with the school flag” and “writing to yourself four years later”, which attracted many new students to participate in actively. What a bustling scene!

During communication with new students, each of them spoke highly of SUSTC, “There are mountains and rivers, and do a great job of virescence!” “Buildings like school library and dormitories are very distinctive!” “Wherever we go, there will be volunteers who guide ways for us. We don’t need to worry about getting lost.” “When we are heading to register, our parents can go to the rest area arranged by Shuren College to watch TV. There is a watering place in the area and tables are placed with beautiful plants!” “Although there are a lot of students, the registration efficiency is especially high. I just finished the process of registration, payment, etc. in about ten minutes” Only in one day, they had felt the warmness of living in SUSTC.

When it was time for dinner; the student canteen was full of a riot of sound due to the arrival of freshmen. In front of the windows for meal, students and their parents stood in long queues. Chefs had to make more meal supplies, but the quality of the food was not affected. The students’ parents in queues told us, “The meals in the canteens are very delicious and is at reasonable prices. It assures us if our child has meals here.” It is reported that over 2300 people had meals in the canteen per meal in average during the registration of freshmen. Therefore, canteen managers added several meal passages and swiping card exits. Meanwhile, meal tickets were sold for the convenience of freshmen who hadn’t received campus cards and their parents to have meals.

In the next few days, SUSTC will arrange activities like tutor meeting, military training, opening ceremony, welcome evening, etc., to help the freshmen integrate themselves into the new life in SUSTC quickly.
