On May 11, 2021, Qun CHEN, Vice Mayor of Shanghai, and his delegation visited the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). Yurong GUO, University Council Chairperson, and Qikun XUE, President of SUSTech, welcomed the guests.

Qun CHEN and his delegation visited SUSTech’s exhibition of development and achievements, Pico Center, Cryo-Electron Microscopy Center, and the Shenzhen Automotive Fuel Cell Stack Engineering Laboratory.

Yurong GUO then gave a brief introduction of the history of SUSTech and its future plans. She noted that it’s the start of a new decade and SUSTech is embarking on a new stage of its development, seizing the opportunity of the “dual-zone” driven by the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and Shenzhen Pilot Demonstration Zone.

President Qikun XUE gave a summary of the current state of affairs of SUSTech. He spoke about the recruitment of faculty personnel, academic disciplines, and the development of the University’s scientific research platforms. He said that SUSTech is focused on the major development needs of the country and to promote more future-oriented interdisciplinary scientific research. The University will strive to cultivate more top talents that will make a significant contribution to society in the future.

Qun CHEN spoke highly of the achievements of SUSTech in the past ten years. He said that Shanghai attaches great importance to the leading role of higher education and hopes that both parties will strengthen their cooperation in scientific and technological innovation, integration of production, teaching and research, and transformation of scientific and technological achievements.

Other members of Qun CHEN’s delegation included Yongping HUANG, Deputy Secretary-General of the Shanghai Municipal Government, Wei SHEN, Party Secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of Education and Health Work, Lijuan MAO, Deputy Secretary-General of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, and Maozhou CAI, Director of the Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau.

Dongxiao ZHANG, Vice President of SUSTech, Yusheng ZHAO, Acting Vice President and Dean of the SUSTech Academy for Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies, Siqi CHEN, Director of the Office of Party Affairs and Administration, and representatives of related departments at SUSTech also attended the meeting.
